Abstract:
An incontinence detection system monitors an area for moisture events and wirelessly transmits moisture-related information to one or more notification devices. The system has a pad that includes a substrate and one or more sensors supported by the substrate. The sensor(s) emit wireless signals indicative of the moisture-related information. A sensor event communication system forwards the sensor signals to another device, such as a notification device. Portions of the system are included in a patient support apparatus, such as a bed.
Abstract:
A patient support apparatus includes a base frame, lift mechanism supporting an upper frame relative to the base frame, a load frame, and a plurality of deck sections, a patient support surface, and a number of barriers positioned about the patient supporting surface. The patient support apparatus includes a notification system for visually notifying a caregiver of a condition or status of a component of the patient support apparatus.
Abstract:
A mattress overlay apparatus is provided for use with a mattress. The mattress overlay apparatus includes an overlay configured for placement atop the mattress and having a plurality of inflatable bladders, a blower, and first and second rotary plate valves pneumatically coupled to the plurality of bladders and the blower. The first and second rotary plate valves are arranged in series between the plurality of bladders and the blower. The first and second rotary plate valves and the blower are operated to provide the overlay with percussion and vibration (P&V), left and right turn assist, and microclimate management (MCM) functionality.
Abstract:
A topper for a patient support surface includes an actively-cooled region that is positioned to deliver air flow under a specific area to provide localized treatment and/or moisture removal to a patient supported on the topper.

Abstract:
Embodiments include a person support apparatus including a plurality of air fluidizable material, a tub, a foam bolster disposed along at least one wall of the tub and extending over the at least one wall, and an inflatable air bladder disposed above the foam bolster along the at least one wall of the tub. A method of assisting a person with ingress or egress of a person support apparatus by deflating the inflatable air bladder and adjusting a level of fluidization of the air fluidizable material such that the surface supporting the portion of the person is substantially level with a top of the foam bolster is also described.
Abstract:
An incontinence detection pad for detecting incontinence events includes a moisture absorbent layer that has non-embossed areas and embossed areas. The non-embossed areas have a first density of fibers of the layer, and the embossed areas have a second density of fibers of the layer that is greater than the first density. The incontinence detection pad further includes a plurality of electrodes positioned beneath the moisture absorbent layer and a transmitter connected to the plurality of electrodes and configured to transmit a signal indicative of a status of the moisture absorbent layer.
Abstract:
A pressure sensing pad or mat comprises a piezoresistive layer, a top electrically conductive layer comprising a plurality of electrically conductive top strips extending in a first direction along one side of the piezoresistive layer, a bottom electrically conductive layer comprising a plurality of electrically conductive bottom strips extending in a second direction, nonparallel to the first direction, along the other side of the piezoresistive layer, and top and bottom adhesive layers holding the top and bottom strips against the piezoresistive layer so as to inhibit relative displacement of the strips relative to the piezoresistive layer and relative to each other. Also disclosed are a method of manufacturing the pressure sensor pad, a pressure sensing system that employs the a sensor mat, and a pressure map display for displaying a pressure distribution of an object resting on the pressure sensing mat.
Abstract:
A lateral rotation apparatus includes a first adjustable frame positioned under a head segment of a person support surface and operable to rotate the head segment of the person support surface to a head tilt angle in the range of about 7 to about 30 degrees relative to a horizontal support plane. A second adjustable frame is positioned under a torso segment of a person support surface and operable to rotate the torso segment of the person support surface to a torso tilt angle that is within a range of about 5 degrees to about 10 degrees less than the head tilt angle. Each of the first adjustable frame and the second adjustable frame includes an upper frame positioned below the person support surface, and a lower frame coupled to and positioned below the upper frame. The upper frame being moveable with respect to the lower frame.
Abstract:
A sleep apparatus, such as a mattress, comprises a head support surface sized to support a person's head, and a torso support surface sized to support a person's torso. The head support surface is generally laterally sloped moving from a first side toward a second side of the mattress, and the torso support surface is generally laterally sloped moving from the first side toward the second side. In some embodiments, the lateral slope of the head support surface is at least about 15°, the lateral slope of the head support surface is greater than the lateral slope of the torso support surface, and/or, the sleep apparatus slopes in the longitudinal direction as well.
