The first pulse set forms a polymer residue on the firing resistor. After the first pulse set and before a collapse of the bubble, a second pulse insufficient to eject a drop of the liquid is applied to the firing resistor. The second pulse facilitates removal of at least a portion of the residue from the firing resistor.
