Abstract:
A method of countermeasuring heat seeking missiles is disclosed in which an infrared source is spatially modulated by providing a beam from the source which is swept past a point in space to produce pulsed infrared energy at this point. In one embodiment the beam is swept around a 360° azimuth for omnidirectional protection.
Abstract:
A system and method for an aircraft (10) that provides an IR decoy (12) for an incoming missile (18) to track instead of an engine (14) of the aircraft (10) is disclosed. The IR decoy (12) is deployed during or just after take off, and prior to landing to provide a signature (16) for any incoming missile (18). The IR decoy (12) provides a heat source (16) that has a higher radiant intensity than the hottest heat source on the aircraft (10), which is typically the engine (14), thereby providing a more attractive heat source for the missile (18). In another embodiment, a warning system (20) for an aircraft (10) detects an incoming missile (18), and deploys IR decoy (12) and creates an engine mask (22) by injecting an additive into the exhaust stream of the engine (14), thereby obscuring the radiation emanating from the engine (14).
Abstract:
E-field sensors are used to establish a protection zone around a vehicle so as to detect the presence of objects within the protection zone, be they other vehicles or individuals. In one embodiment the direction to the intruding object is established by virtue of the use of pairs of E-field sensors. In a further embodiment the range of the E-field sensors determines the limited protection zone around the vehicle. Because of the limited protection zone, false alarms are greatly reduced.
Abstract:
An E-field sensing system is provided to detect the presence of obstacles, including wires, power lines or trip wires, as well as towers, guy wires, buildings and elevated terrain, in which a variation or tilt of the iso-potential electrostatic field adjacent the obstacle is detected. In one embodiment the bearing to the obstacle is ascertained. The result is the detection of power lines from as far away as at least 1,000 feet and unpowered wires from as far away as at least 100 feet, thus reducing pilot anxiety for low level missions as well as providing for wire strike avoidance.
Abstract:
A multiple spectral band opto-mechanical modulator for obtaining simultaneous but independent modulation of an extended IR source in two distinct wavelength bands comprises in one embodiment a first rotating filter wheel having alternating radial segments of transparent and short wavepass filter material, a second rotating filter wheel having alternating radial segments of transparent and long wavepass filter material, a stationary wheel having alternating radial transparent and opaque segments positioned intermediate the first and second rotating wheels and means for rotating said first and second filter wheels at predetermined frequencies.
