摘要: A soil resistant aqueous coating composition in which the binder consists of a blend of a low Tg polymeric dispersion and a high Tg polymeric dispersion. The PVC of the composition is less than the critical PVC and the Tg of the low Tg polymer dispersion is less than 0.degree. C. and the Tg of the high Tg polymer dispersion is a least 35.degree. C. and the volume ratio of low Tg polymer dispersion to high Tg polymer dispersion is from 0.4:1 to 1.4:1.

摘要: Aqueous coating compositions are described where the binder includes an anionically stabilized polymeric dispersion. The monomers used to prepare the dispersion are acrylic acid and methacrylic acid as a carboxylic monomer and styrene, alpha methyl styrene or vinyl toluene as a hydrophobic high Tg aromatic monomer and an alkyl acrylate ester as a low Tg monomer. The relative weight proportions of the monomers are required to satisfy a formula. Blends of high and low Tg dispersions are also described. Paints formulated with the binders exhibit an excellent balance of stain resistance, tint strength and viscosity stability.

摘要: This invention relates to a process for preparing an aqueous dispersion of water insoluble polymer particles comprising: a) preparing by polymerisation an aqueous dispersion of water insoluble particles of a heteropolymer including monomeric units of a reactive amphiphile having a cloud point and monomeric units of a hydrophilic monomer, said polymerisation being conducted in the presence of a stabilising agent and the reactive amphiphile and at a temperature above the cloud point of said amphiphile, and b) cooling said aqueous dispersion to a temperature below the cloud point of the reactive amphiphile such that the viscosity of the aqueous dispersion increases. The invention also relates to aqueous dispersions of water insoluble heteropolymer particles which incorporate units of reactive amphiphile.

摘要: A process of modifying the levelling characteristics of a film of a polar liquid coating composition by incorporating therein 0.5-60% by weight of an amphipathic random copolymer which comprises 5-50% of a monomer which has a chain-like structure at least 80 covalent bonds long and which is soluble in poly(ethylene oxide) of molecular weight 400, and 25-95% of a (meth)acrylate monomer which comprises a chain-like moiety of at least 10 covalent atoms long and which is not soluble in poly(ethylene oxide) of molecular weight 400. The resulting copolymer may be added to polar liquid coating compositions to give useful improvements in flow and levelling characteristics.

摘要: The invention relates to the use of a diacyl peroxide in combination with an aromatic amine of formula (I) where R1 is C1-C20 alkyl having at least one hydroxy substituent or —(CH′CHR′—O)nH where n is 1 to 10 and each R′ is independently selected from H and C1-C3 alkyl; R2 is C1-C20 alkyl optionally substituted with one or more hydroxy groups, or —(CHR′CHR′—O)nH where n=1 to 10; and each R is independently selected from H and C1-C3 alkyl; and Ar is an optionally substituted aryl group; as a redox initiating system in a process for the manufacture of polyester granules by suspension polymerisation. This invention also relates to a process for preparing solid polyester granules using such a redox initiating system.

摘要: Aqueous coating composition are described wherein the binder includes an anionically stabilized addition polymerized dispersion of a polymer. The monomers used to prepare the dispersion are acrylic cid and methyacrylic acid, as carboxylic monomers and styrene, alpha-methyl styrene or vinyl toluene as a hydrophobic high Tg aromatic monomer. Acrylate ester is used as a low Tg monomer. The relative weight proportions of the monomers are required to satisfy the designated formula. Blends of high and low Tg dispersions are also provided. Pains formulated with the binders of present invention exhibit excellent balance of stain resistance, tint strength and viscosity stability.

摘要: Very small (100 nanometres maximum) non-ionically-stabilised core-sheath addition polymer particles, wherein the core is addition polymer and the sheath polyoxyalkylene chains, at least a portion of which chains are bonded to the core, there being present on each core sufficient chains such that the mass ratio of core to sheath is from 98:2 to 60:40. The particles are prepared by polymerisation in aqueous media initiated at under 40.degree. C. In a preferred embodiment, a seed-feed process is used. The dispersions exhibit excellent rheological characteristics and are useful, for example, as film-formers in coating compositions.

摘要: This invention relates to stable aqueous dispersions of film-forming addition polymer.Novel aqueous dispersions comprise polymer which is a copolymer of amphipathic and non-amphipathic monomer. The amphipathic monomer has an HLB value of at least 8, the hydrophilic component thereof is non-ionic, and the lipophilic component has a molecular weight of at least 100, comprises at least one ethylenic double bond but has no acrylyl or methacrylyl structure. The polymer comprises up to 80% by weight of amphipathic monomer.The dispersions are useful as components of such compositions as surface coatings and adhesives.
