Abstract: A surface-reduced photochromic glass containing silver halide crystals, having an original transmittance of 60-75%, a darkened transmittance of less than 30% at 25.degree. C., a faded transmittance equal to the darkened transmittance plus at least 25% and a value of at least 50%, a position in a color mixture diagram between 575 and 585 nm, the glass composition having a Na.sub.2 O content of at least 1% in its surface, or containing as additives 1-6 ppm Pd, or a combination of 2-10 ppm Au and up to 0.9% Er.sub.2 O.sub.3. The glass may be chemically strengthened and generally has a longer dominant wavelength when so treated.

Abstract: A dense barium borosilicate glass is disclosed having a refractive index greater than 1.64 and a dispersive index of at least 53, together with a high degree of chemical durability such that optical blanks molded from the glass can be finished on automatic machinery with minimal danger of staining. The glass consists essentially of 18-30% SiO.sub.2, 8-22% B.sub.2 O.sub.3, 25-48% BaO, 0-10% other divalent metal oxides, 25-45% total divalent metal oxides, 10-30% La.sub.2 O.sub.3, 0-6% ZrO.sub.2 and/or SnO.sub.2, with the mole ratio of BaO:SiO.sub.2 not exceeding 0.6 and preferably not exceeding 0.5.

Abstract: A glass article that is effective in polarizing radiation in the range of 400-700 nm and method of making, the glass having an R.sub.2 O--Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 --B.sub.2 O.sub.3 --SiO.sub.2 base glass composition, a precipitated crystal phase consisting of a halide selected from the group composed of cuprous, cadmium and mixed cuprous-cadmium halides, the crystals in the crystal phase being elongated, and a portion of the crystals near the surface of the article being at least partially reduced to colloidal copper, whereby the article exhibits permanent dichroic behavior and has a polarization efficiency across the entire wavelength range of 400-700 nm of at least 0.80.
