摘要: A method is provided for calibrating a surgical biopsy system. The biopsy system includes a biopsy instrument and control unit. The biopsy instrument includes a piercer, rotatable cutter, and a port for receiving tissue samples. The method comprises the steps of translating the cutter distally until the translation of the cutter is stopped at an extended position and recording the extended position. The cutter is then translated from the extended position proximally until the translation of the cutter is stopped at a retracted position proximal to the extended position. The retracted position is recorded. The method further comprises the step of rotating the cutter to a rotation speed while the cutter is located at the retracted position and, if determined that the rotation speed is within a predetermined rotation speed range, a feedback signal is provided on the display allowing the operator to progress to the next procedural step.

摘要: Various compositions, methods, and devices are provided that use fluorescent nanoparticles, which can function as markers, indicators, and light sources. The fluorescent nanoparticles can be formed from a fluorophore core surrounded by a biocompatible shell, such as a silica shell. In one embodiment, the fluorescent nanoparticles can be delivered to tissue to mark the tissue, enable identification and location of the tissue, and/or illuminate an area surrounding the tissue. In another embodiment, the fluorescent nanoparticles can be used on a device or implant to locate the device or implant in the body, indicate an orientation of the device or implant, and/or illuminate an area surrounding the device or implant. The fluorescent nanoparticles can also be used to provide a therapeutic effect.

摘要: A system for facilitating communication between customer equipment modules and a third party equipment module through use of the data transfer module is described. The data transfer module includes a communication port for communicating with the third party equipment module, as well as ports and a connector for communicating with customer equipment modules. The data transfer module is portable and allows for the transfer of information to and from itself and any customer equipment module while disconnected from the third party equipment module and, likewise, information can be transferred between the data transfer module and the third party equipment module while disconnected from the customer equipment modules. This portability and ability to transfer information to the customer equipment modules without simultaneous communication to the third party equipment module facilitates use of the system when customer equipment modules are not easily accessible to external communication sources.

摘要: A dimensional weighing apparatus is disclosed which has a weighing scale for determining the actual weight of a carton placed thereon, and associated therewith is a measuring frame and an optical sensing system for measuring the linear distance of the three axes of carton positioned on the scale necessary to determine the volume of the carton. A computer processing unit determines firstly whether the actual volume of the carton is less or greater than a predetermined threshold volume, and provides an operator with a signal indicating that determination. The apparatus includes means for permitting the operator to determine whether he will manually measure the carton to determine its actual volume for a more accurate determination than is provided by the measuring frame and optical sensing system, or if he will cause the dimensional weighing apparatus to calculate the dimensional weight of the carton and determine a shipping weight based thereon, thereby accepting a less accurate determination of a shipping weight in the interest of greater speed.

摘要: The invention is a method and apparatus for measuring the dimensions of a parcel for use in a parcel processing application of a data processing device, wherein a parcel is placed in a predetermined position on a weighing scale with a platform having at least two raised sides for placing the parcel thereagainst. When the parcel is placed, beams from a first laser source and from a second laser source are transmitted onto the parcel at a first and second target spot wherein the target spots are a known distance from each other, and wherein the target spots are in a line parallel to the weighing scale. The beams are reflected back to a rotating mirror assembly and to a beam detector. The mirror assembly is located in a line parallel to one of the two laser beam sources and is rotated at a constant rate so as to focus on the first and second target spots. The angle of focus of the mirror assembly is determinative of the distance from the mirror assembly to the parcel surface. If the determined angle of focus does not allow the mirror assembly to properly focus on the target spots, then the assembly is adjusted under control of the data processing device by adjusting the angle of focus wherein the degree of adjustment is determinative of a change in distance between the mirror assembly and the parcel surface.

摘要: A system for the metering of encrypted postage and similar indicia includes a device for printing such indicia and a device for reading such indicia. The printing is accomplished with a dot matrix printer and a bar-code printer driven by signals obtained by a character generator and an encryption circuit. The reading is accomplished by a bar-code reader and a dot matrix reader. Intelligence is obtained by correlating received characters against a stored array of symbols to determine the presence of a symbol, and the comparison of the separated coded data with a reference code to determine the accuracy of the printed material. Thereby, forgery and alteration is inhibited. The data and the encrypted material are imprinted by indicia utilizing both the formats of alphanumeric characters and the formats of a bar code. In both cases, a portion of a group of characters and a portion of a bar code are set aside for communicating the message while the remaining portions are utilized for encrypted material for verification of the message.

摘要: A circuit for detecting the failure of a system to respond in a planned manner to a binary control signal includes a circuit for generating a check signal which normally changes in phase with the control signal. The failure detect circuit includes inverters for generating inverted control and check signals. AND gates compare each signal with the inverted form of the other. A NOR gate produces a failure-indicating signal when an equality is sensed.
