Abstract: A display article is described herein that includes: a substrate comprising a thickness and a primary surface; and the primary surface having defined thereon a diffractive surface region. The diffractive surface region comprises a plurality of structural features that comprises a plurality of different heights in a multimodal distribution. Further, the substrate exhibits a sparkle of less than 4%, as measured by pixel power deviation (PPD140) at an incident angle of 0° from normal, a distinctness of image (DOI) of less than 80% at an incident angle of 20° from normal, and a transmittance haze of less than 20% from an incident angle of 0° from normal.

Abstract: The disclosure relates to a grating coupler, the grating coupler comprising: a substrate comprising a first major surface and a second major surface; and a surface relief structure located on at least one of the major surfaces of the substrate wherein: the grating coupler has a first order diffraction efficiency of at least 0.3 (30%) across at least a 20° incident light angle range. The surface relief structures described herein can comprise a plurality of notches, each of the notches facing substantially in a x-direction and having a radius of curvature greater than about 50 nm.

Abstract: Anti-sparkle substrates include a plurality of features extending from a first major surface of the anti-sparkle substrate. In aspects, a feature of the plurality of features includes a feature concentration of one or more of silver, rubidium, or cesium that is non-zero at the first major surface and is greater than a corresponding concentration of a region of the first major surface excluding the plurality of features. In aspects, a feature of the plurality of features includes a gradient refractive index profile. A feature refractive index of the feature at the first major surface is greater than a substrate refractive index by about 0.03 or more. Methods include exposing a plurality of portions of a first major surface of a substrate to a source of one or more of silver ions, rubidium ions, or cesium ions to form a plurality of features in that include the plurality of portions.

Abstract: An optical metasurface includes a substrate and a plurality of nanostructures extending from a surface of the substrate and constructed of a material having an index of refraction. The plurality of nanostmctures are arranged in a plurality of unit cells comprising a dimension that is less than or equal to twice an effective wavelength of light incident on the optical metasurface, divided by the sinusoid of a deflection angle that the optical metasurface is designed to deflect the light. The plurality of nanostructures are asymmetrically arranged along a deflection direction. A unit cell aspect ratio of the plurality of nanostmctures is greater than or equal to 3, and a product of the unit cell aspect ratio and the index of refraction of the material is greater than or equal to 8.

The article also exhibits a first-surface average photopic specular reflectance (% R) of less than 0.3% at any incident angle from about 5° to 20° from normal at visible wavelengths.

The textured article generally has good abrasion resistance and optical properties including antiglare, haze, sparkle, and distinctness of image. A method for making a textured article is also described herein comprising removing a first portion of a primary surface of a substrate through holes penetrating through a stop layer to the primary surface to form seed depressions and unremoved portions, removing the stop layer, and then removing a second portion of the primary surface comprising the seed depressions and the unremoved portions.

Abstract: A glass article comprises a film layer deposited on a glass substrate. The film layer has a melting point less than 450° C. and comprises a thickness and a primary surface. The primary surface defines at least one elevated surface protruding relative to the at least one relief surface. The elevated surface forms a periodic pattern defined by an etch mask, and the relief surface is defined as an inverse pattern of the etch mask. The duration of an etching process applied to the film layer defines a ratio of a first area of the elevated surface to a second area of the relief surface.
