Abstract: Glass-based articles having defined stress profiles and methods for manufacturing such glass-based articles are provided. A non-limiting glass-based article comprises an outer region extending from the surface to a depth of compression, wherein the outer region is under a neutral stress or a first compressive stress, a core region under a second compressive stress, the second compressive stress defining a compression peak having a maximum compression value and a maximum width at zero stress in a range of from about 1 micrometer to about 200 micrometers, and an intermediate region disposed between the surface and the core region, wherein the intermediate region is under a tensile stress.

Abstract: A glass-based assembly includes a glass or glass-ceramic substrate comprising a surface. The surface has flaws, such as a population of small cracks extending into the surface, whereby the substrate is weakened relative to ideal strength thereof. The assembly further includes a coating coupled to the substrate and overlaying at least some of the flaws. Ultimate strength of the substrate with the coating coupled thereto is greater than that of the substrate alone, without the coating.

Abstract: A textured article is described herein comprising a substrate comprising a textured region defined on a primary surface of the substrate, in which the textured region comprises (a) a Vmp/Sq of at least 0.084, (b) a Vmp/Sq of at least 0.084 and an Smrk2 of at least 90%, and/or (c) a Vmp of at least 10 nm and an Sdq of 0-0.1. The textured article generally has good abrasion resistance and optical properties including antiglare, haze, sparkle, and distinctness of image. A method for making a textured article is also described herein comprising removing a first portion of a primary surface of a substrate through holes penetrating through a stop layer to the primary surface to form seed depressions and unremoved portions, removing the stop layer, and then removing a second portion of the primary surface comprising the seed depressions and the unremoved portions.

Abstract: A glass substrate comprises: a first position, wherein a tensile stress of the glass substrate is insufficient to cause fragmentation of the glass substrate into small pieces upon fracture of the glass substrate; and a second position, wherein the glass substrate is bent relative to the first position, and wherein the tensile stress of the glass substrate is sufficient to cause fragmentation of the glass substrate into small pieces upon fracture of the glass substrate. The glass substrate can include a first surface and a second surface. In the first position, the first surface and the second surface of the glass substrate can be planar. In the second position, the first surface and the second surface of the glass substrate can be planar. The small pieces can be generally cubic. In the second position, the glass substrate can be bent uniaxially along a bend axis of the glass substrate.

Abstract: Frangible glass articles having a fracture behavior that resists ejection of glass particles upon fracture. In some embodiments, the frangible glass articles can have a first surface region with a first elastic compressive stress energy per unit area of glass (Welcomp1), a second surface region with a second elastic compressive stress energy per unit area of glass (Welcomp2), and a central region with an elastic tensile stress energy per unit area of glass (WT), where (Welcomp1+Welcomp2)−WT≤25 J/m2. In some embodiments, the frangible glass articles can have a total load ratio (Wi/GD) less than 6.5 and a total elastic compressive stress energy per unit area of glass (WC) less than 60% of a total load (Wi), where: WC=Welcomp1+Welcomp2, Wi=WC+WT, GD=4G1C, and G 1 C = K 1 C 2 ( 1 - v 2 ) E . In some embodiments, the frangible glass articles can have a differential load ratio (Wd/GIC) less than 7 2 e ( - 1 2 d 1 t ) .
