A dedicated liquid level detection method having a sensor positioned into the casing of a groundwater well. The detector is in the form of an elongated thin film sensor tape that extends along the fill length of the well casing which detects the level, thickness and volume of both groundwater and any light or dense non-aqueous phase liquid that may be present. This is accomplished through the use of a conductive and hydrostatic resistive circuit measuring the level of liquids in a groundwater well at one hundredths of foot resolution or greater. Once the elongated sensor is installed, liquid levels can be gauged from the surface. The data is stored using a battery operated hand held digital display temporarily connected at the top well section casing. Since a sensor probe is not lowered into the well, cross contamination between wells is eliminated.

A capacitive liquid level sensor material, which includes a first thin, flexible, elongated insulating substrate of indeterminate length having a continuous sensing capacitor printed thereon. The sensing capacitor has a repeating interdigitated capacitive pattern formed by two separate electrodes printed on the substrate. There is a second thin, flexible, elongated insulating substrate of indeterminate length joined to the first substrate to electrically isolate the sensing capacitor, and the electrodes coplanar. The second substrate has a graphic ink pattern printed thereon. The joined first and second substrates are arranged to be wound up into a roll of at least several turns. The sensor material is then cut to length and terminated with a crimp type connector to produce a sensor of the desired length.

First and second elongated flexible insulated substrates have patterns of resistive liquid level sensor sections along the substrate lengths, each pattern comprising printable resistive ink of the same resistivity (ohms-squared), wherein the patterns can be simultaneously printed upon each substrate to save manufacturing costs. The substrates can be separated by an elongated spacer that couples longitudinal edges of the facing substrates together with an appropriate adhesive. Alternatively, the facing substrates can be folded along a central fold line to form a first longitudinal edge and adhesively joined along a second longitudinal edge opposite the first longitudinal edge. The flexibility of the substrates enables the low manufacturing cost liquid level sensors to be positioned in for example in a highly irregularly shaped vehicle fuel tank. Also, sections of varying lengths to be cut from the rolls on demand by users to form customized lengths of liquid level sensors for numerous applications.
