Abstract: An article includes an optical transforming layer and a guide region positioned inside and adjacent to at least a portion of a perimeter of the optical transforming layer. The guide region comprises an inlet end positioned adjacent to a first surface of the optical transforming layer and an outlet end positioned adjacent a second surface of the optical transforming layer. The guide region propagates light from the inlet end to the outlet end such that the light is directed from the first surface to the second surface. The guide region includes a phase-separated glass comprising a continuous network phase and a discontinuous phase. A relative difference in index of refraction between the continuous network phase and the discontinuous phase is greater than or equal to 0.3%. The discontinuous phase comprises elongated shaped regions aligned along a common axis and having an aspect ratio greater than or equal to 10:1.

Abstract: A method of melting glass and glass-ceramics that includes the steps: conveying a batch of raw materials into a submerged combustion melting apparatus, the melting apparatus having liquid-cooled walls and a floor; directing a flame into the batch of raw materials and the melted batch with sufficient energy to form the raw materials into the melted batch; and heating a delivery orifice assembly in the floor of the submerged melting apparatus to convey the melted batch through the orifice assembly into a containment vessel. The melted batch has a glass or glass-ceramic composition that is substantially reactive to a refractory material comprising one or more of silica, zirconia, alumina, platinum and platinum alloys.

Abstract: According to one or more embodiments described herein, a three-dimensional laminate glass article may be manufactured by a process which may include heating a glass stack including at least two glass sheets that are unbonded with one another at a first temperature range, fusing the first glass sheet with the second glass sheet by heating the glass stack at a second temperature range, and shaping the glass stack. The first temperature range may be from about 150° C. to about 400° C. for a first period of time of at least about 5 minutes. The second temperature range may be from about 400° C. to about 1200° C.

Abstract: A bio-container that includes a single-use container having an interior surface, an exterior surface, and a container thickness from about 0.2 mm to about 2 mm; and at least one port coupled to the container. Further, the container has a glass composition with no materials that are leachable in excess of a Permitted Daily Exposure (PDE) upon exposure to contents of the container. In some implementations, the container can include a compressive stress region that extends to a selected depth in the thickness and a maximum compressive stress at one or both of the interior and exterior surfaces. Further, the container can comprise a laminated sheet having a plurality of glass layers spanning the container thickness. These layers can comprise glass compositions with a CTE mismatch and the compressive stress region is based at least in part on the CTE mismatch.

Abstract: Systems for producing articles from glass tube include a converter having a base with a plurality of processing stations and a turret moveable relative to the base. The turret indexes a plurality of holders for holding the glass tubes successively through the processing stations. The systems further include a gas flow system or a suction system for producing a flow of gas through the glass tube during one or more heating, forming, separating or piercing operations. The flow of gas through the glass tube produced by the gas flow system or suction system may be sufficient to evacuate or purge volatile constituents of the glass from the glass tube and/or pierce a meniscus formed on the glass tube during separation, thereby reducing the Surface Hydrolytic Response (SHR) of the interior surface of the glass tube and articles made therefrom.

Abstract: A laminated or single layer glass cylinder and its method of making are disclosed. The laminated cylinder glass is a precursor component to enable making subsequent drawn tubing having high optical quality. The laminated cylinder glass may comprise a first layer of glass as a clad glass and a second layer of glass as a core glass. The second layer of glass may be bound to the first layer of glass. The second layer may have a higher CTE from about 5×10−7/° C. to about 100×10−7/° C. than the first layer of glass. The first layer and second layer of glass may have different softening points within about 200° C. of each other. In some embodiments, the first layer and second layer of glass may have different softening points from about 50° C. to about 200° C. of each other.

Abstract: A hollow glass waveguide and related method are provided. The microwave waveguide includes a glass body including a first end, a second end, an outer glass surface extending between the first end and the second end, an inner glass surface defining a hollow channel that extends from the first end to the second end and a glass material between the outer surface and the inner surface. The microwave waveguide includes a layer of metal embedded in the glass body. The layer of metal surrounds the hollow channel when viewed in cross-section and extends between the first end and the second end of the glass body. The layer of metal is electrically conductive and the hollow channel is dimensioned such that microwaves introduced into the hollow channel are conducted along the hollow channel between the first end and the second end.
