摘要: The apparatus and method of the present invention utilize a pair of fixed-position laser triangulation sensors, with one sensor located above the board and one directly below. Each sensor produces a measurement signal proportional to the distance between itself and the corrugated board's surface. In one embodiment, the output signal from each sensor is simultaneously processed along two different parallel paths to measure different corrugated board characteristics. A second pair of sensors may be located on the opposite edge of the board. When both board edges are measured, the left and right-edge measurements are averaged to produce a mean value for the board's full width, as well as subtracted from one another to determine the coss-machine gradient.

摘要: Disclosed is an apparatus for providing a shower of fog onto a web or a machine component in contact with a web. The fog, which has a temperature lower than the temperature of the surface of the web or the machine component to be cooled, is applied to the surface and is caused to evaporate by the difference in the temperatures. A supply of dry air is supplied to transport the evaporated fog from the region adjacent the surface to be cooled. Fog may be generated through the use of an air-atomizing nozzle which propels water and compressed air through a small orifice under pressure to create an atomized mist or fog. In one embodiment, the fog may also be supplied in controlled specified quantities locally as required to provide for a controllable fog application rate across the full apparatus width. The fog is thus generated at a single source and then supplied to a common cross-machine plenum with the flow of fog to each local region being regulated by a locally adjustable outlet of the apparatus through which the fog and dry air flow.

摘要: The present invention is directed to an electrode structure which is most applicable for plasticating barrels having wound, wire resistance heaters. Electrode structure includes at least one lower electrode plate and an upper electrode plate. A closely wound electrode band connected to the wound wire resistance heater is formed over the lower electrode plate to assure maximum electrical, and thus, thermal transfer. An upper ceramic layer is formed over the electrode band and wound wire resistance heaters. This upper ceramic layer can be ground down to accommodate the addition of an external plate on top of the upper electrode plate.

摘要: The system and method of the present invention determines the rate of application of liquid glue to corrugated board on a corrugator. A sensor employing the principle of infrared absorption measures the amount of water on the surface of the glue roll upstream of the point of application of the glue to the corrugated board's medium. A second sensor employing the principle of infrared absorption measurers the amount of water on the surface of the glue roll downstream of the point of application of the glue to the corrugated board's medium. Using calibration coefficients the two sensor's output signals are then converted into film thickness measurements. The downstream film thickness measurement is then subtracted from the upstream film thickness measurement to compute the reduction in film thickness caused by the intervening application of the glue to the medium.

摘要: A system for supplying processed material includes a barrel for transporting the processed material, having a chamber and an electrically conductive wall enclosing the chamber. The barrel has a length and an outer surface. Thermal insulation extends along at least a portion of the length and around the outer surface and provides an exterior surface whose contour is uniform and formed without grooves. A coil comprising an electric conductor is encased in an electrical insulating sheath. The coil contacts and encircles the exterior surface in loops forming an induction winding that extends along at least a portion of the length and around the exterior surface in a spiral path. An induction power supply is used for supplying alternating current to the coil at a relatively high frequency.

摘要: A caliper control system for controlling the thickness and sheet quality of paper passing between calender rolls of a calender stack includes a distribution chamber which houses a supply of heat transfer fluid. A series of nozzles extends across the width of the unit in the cross machine direction, and each of these nozzles are selectively actuable. An actuating means, which may be a piston connected to a solenoid, opens and closes an opening in the wall between the distribution chamber and the nozzle for each nozzle of the unit. In a preferred embodiment, the caliper control system includes two such units. One of these units will supply hot air to the roll surface, and the roll to which the hot air is applied to an unheated roll. The second unit will supply cold air to a heated roll. Each of the nozzles is covered with a plate which includes a large number of apertures for expelling the heat-transfer fluid from the nozzle. The travel of the heat-transfer fluid is such that an impingement flow is created through the apertures. The heat transfer fluid is heated or cooled by a heat exchanger which includes a number of internally finned tubes over which a steam or cold water flow is applied. The air forced through the tubes by a fan is then either heated or cooled.

To achieve localized control of the application of fog, a plurality of air atomizing nozzles is mounted in a row extending in the cross machine direction of the apparatus. An air plenum extending parallel to the row of air atomizing nozzles is mounted on at least one side of the row. Each air plenum includes a slot that directs an air curtain toward the mist flow from the nozzle to restrict the flow to a uniformly dimensioned area.
