The actuator includes a body portion for pivotally coupling to the disk drive and an actuator arm cantilevered from the body portion for supporting a head gimbal assembly (HGA). The actuator further includes a coil assembly having a coil and a fork. The fork is cantilevered from the body portion in an opposite direction from the actuator arm and includes a pair of opposed prongs to mount the coil. At least one of the prongs of the fork includes at least two opposed fins to aid in the convection of heat from the coil.

    摘要: A disk array includes a mainframe chassis conforming to standard SCSI disk drive mechanical form factors, and a mother board and a RAID controller within the chassis. The chassis includes a pivotable access door shock absorber mounted on an inside surface of the door which permits electronic modules to be placed within the chassis, and which helps to control mechanical shock between the chassis and the enclosed electronic modules. The mother board interconnects electrical signals between the electronic modules, at least some of which comprise disk drives forming a redundant array of independent, or inexpensive, disks (RAID). One of the electronic modules is a secondary power supply module which is connectable to the mother board. The RAID controller is electrically connected to a system host power supply and a host interface bus, and through the RAID controller the mother board interconnects all the electrical signals between the system host power supply and the host interface bus with the secondary power supply module and the RAID disk drives.

    摘要: An improved spindle motor is provided for rotatably driving one or more memory storage disks in a computer disk drive or the like. The spindle motor comprises a stator shaft having opposite ends anchored to a disk drive housing, and a cylindrical rotor hub supported by bearings from the stator shaft for relatively high speed rotation. The stator shaft carries an armature in magnetically coupled relation with a high strength unitary permanent magnet sleeve carried by the rotor hub, with the number of armature poles and permanent magnet poles being mismatched to achieve low cogging motor operation. The memory disks have central openings therein and are mounted about the rotor hub for rotation during motor operation. Axially elongated resilient shim strips disposed about the rotor hub insure initial disk alignment with their inner diameter edges spaced from direct contact with the rotor hub, thereby permitting the hub and/or disks to accommodate normal thermal gradients during operation without positional shifting of the disks with respect to each other.

    摘要: An improved disk drive unit is provided for use in microcomputers such as personal computers and the like. The disk drive unit includes a substantially sealed disk drive housing and related circuit board with drive electronics carried by a common rigid chassis. A power connector plug is securely mounted onto the chassis at a rear margin thereof and cooperates with one or more interface connectors to permit simple slide fit installation of the disk drive unit into a computer system cabinet, such as a central processor unit for a computer. In addition, the disk drive unit includes improved shock mounts for supporting the sealed disk drive housing from the rigid chassis. The disk drive unit further includes a floating bushing arrangement for interconnecting the circuit board to the disk drive housing in a manner substantially isolating thermal expansion characteristics of the circuit board from the remainder of the disk drive unit.

    摘要: A station for writing servo track and clock information onto a hard disk drive assembly (HDA) automatically positions and accesses a pallet assembly, including the HDA, in accordance with computerized instructions. A Winchester-type HDA is positioned on the pallet assembly, which in turn is positioned upon a carriage assembly. An automatic, computer-controlled sequence begins which draws the carriage assembly into the station, connects the HDA electronically with the station, and then causes a platten assembly to lift the pallet assembly (with the HDA) into engagement with a top plate assembly. The top plate assembly engages the HDA in a manner wherein the positioning of the HDA actuator assembly is accurately controlled relative to the hard disks located therein. After the hard disks are brought to operational speed utilizing a spindle motor built into the HDA, a clock head assembly positions a clock head to write clock data onto the upper surface of a selected hard disk. A positioner assembly, through an arm assembly, then precisely moves the HDA actuator assembly to erase a face of a hard disk, and then write servo data onto that face utilizing the read/write head of the HDA actuator assembly itself. After the servo data has been applied, the pallet assembly is lowered by the platten assembly, and then withdrawn by the carriage assembly for removal. To assist in disconnecting the HDA from the pallet assembly, ejectors are provided adjacent to a read/write flex connector and to a spindle motor connector on the pallet assembly.
