Abstract: A system for transmitting data between two transceivers comprises a first transceiver (100e) connected to a second transceiver (100f) by means of a connection 41b comprising a plurality of pairs of wires. Each transceiver comprises a transmitter portion and a receiver portion. The transmitter portion comprises a transmitter for transmitting a set of data signals over the pairs of wires each pair of wires having a nearside end and a distal end, the nearside ends being connected to the transmitter and at least some of the distal ends being connected to the receiver portion of the other transmitter (100e), the data signals comprising a first subset of data signals and a second subset of data signals. The transmitter comprises: an orthogonal discrete coding transformation unit and an inverse fast Fourier transformation unit, the orthogonal discrete coding transformation unit being operable to generate, in combination with the inverse fast Fourier transformation unit, a first set of transmission signals, by combining the data signals in the first subset of data signals using an orthogonal discrete coding transformation and then transforming these into corresponding time domain signals using an inverse fast Fourier transformation, the inverse fast Fourier transformation unit being additionally operable to generate a second set of transmission signals by transforming each data signal in the second subset of data signals into the time domain to form the second set of transmission signals; wherein the transmitter further comprises an analogue front end unit for generating wire driving signals derived from the transmission signals and a series of driving transformers, each of which is connected to the near ends of the wires of a respective one of the pairs of wires, and each driving transformer includes a centre tap connected to receive a driving signal derived from a respective one of the first set of transmission signals, whereby each of the transmission signals in the first set of transmission signals is transmitted in a common mode over a respective one of the plurality of pairs of wires and each of the transmission signals in the second set of transmission signals is transmitted over a respective one of the plurality of pairs of wires in a differential mode.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for transmitting data in a communication system including a transmitter and receivers, each receiver being connected to the transmitter via a communication channel, the method including: precoding the data for transmission on the channels to provide first precoded data; using the first precoded data, for each channel, computing a number of bits to be allocated to that channel; determining that the bit allocation does not satisfy one or more criteria; ranking the channels in an order based on channel properties; discarding for use as a direct channel, one or more channels based on the ranking; precoding the data for transmission on the channels accounting for the discarded channels to provide second precoded data; and transmitting, by the transmitter, the second precoded data on the channels.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for transmitting data from a transmitter device to one or more receiver devices connected to the transmitter device via a respective wire connection, the transmitter device being operable to transmit signals onto the wire connections and a further wire connection at different tones, the method comprising: for each tone, measuring electromagnetic coupling between the further wire connection and each of the wire connections and using the measurements, identifying a wire connection that most strongly receives crosstalk interference from the further wire connection; based on the identifications, for each tones, allocating signals transmitted on the further wire connection as supporting signals for a particular wire connection; transmitting a first signal onto the particular wire connection that has been allocated a supporting signal; and transmitting a second signal onto the further wire connection, thereby to cause crosstalk interference in the particular wire connection transmitting the first signal.

Abstract: A system (100), (200), (310), (320) for transmitting data between an upstream transceiver (100) and a downstream transceiver (200) via two pairs of wires (310), (320) extending between the transceivers. The system comprises: the upstream transceiver (100) which includes first (110) and second (120) transmitter portions; the downstream transceiver (200) which includes first (210) and second (220) receiver portions for receiving signals transmitted by the upstream transceiver in a differential mode; and the two pairs of wires (310), (320) extending between the transceivers, the wires forming a composite channel through which signals transmitted by the upstream transceiver travel before being received by the downstream transceiver, the composite channel including direct differential mode channels h11 and h22 between the first and second transmitter portions on the one hand and the first and second receiver portions respectively on the other hand, and indirect channels h21 and h12 between the first and second transmitter portions on the one hand and the second and first receiver portions respectively on the other hand. The upstream transceiver is operable to transmit, to the downstream transceiver, using a discrete multi-tone protocol capable of using up to a number of different tones, a data signal in which related signals are transmitted onto both pairs of wires in a differential mode, such that, in use, each of the first and second receiver portions receives a respective one of the transmitted signals after modification by the composite channel together with some portion of the other related signal. Each receiver portion includes a fast Fourier Transform module for converting the received signal into the frequency domain and a related-signals processing frequency domain equaliser for further processing the resulting signal using frequency domain equalisation coefficients calculated in dependence upon estimated channel transfer functions associated with the direct differential mode channel terminating at the respective receiver portion and additionally in dependence upon estimated channel transfer functions associated with the indirect channel terminating at the respective receiver portion.
