A method of separating solid particles from suspension in a liquid comprises submerging within the suspension a chamber having a pervious peripheral wall in the form of a surface of revolution, forcing liquid from the suspension into the chamber through the pervious wall, rotating the chamber at a speed sufficient to separate particles from the liquid flowing into the chamber, restricting circumferential flow of the filtrate within the chamber, removing filtrate from the interior of the chamber, and removing particles outside the chamber. As shown, a removable unit is mounted by a plate 20g on a tank 10g and immersed in suspension supplied by a pipe, not shown. The unit includes a rotary cylindrical drum of expanded metal, 28g covered with flexible sheet screen material, between end plates 26g. The interior of the drum communicates with an outlet pipe having a connection 60 with a fixed suction pipe. Circumferential movement of filtrate within the drum is restricted by a number of (fixed) radial baffles 54 secured to a cone 66g secured in turn to a fixed post 48g supporting, at its upper end, the lower end of the drive shaft 16g. The baffles 54 are cut away at 74 in the region of the filtrate outlet.
