摘要:
Reduction of exhaust emissions is obtained by controlling the carburetor choke valve with greater flexibility. A piston motor responsive to manifold vacuum opens the choke valve partially soon after the engine starts. A diaphragm motor responds to engine vacuum more slowly than the first motor. The diaphragm acts through a modulating spring to open the choke valve, which is connected to a thermostatic coil spring urging the choke valve closed at low ambient temperatures. At high ambient temperatures, actuation of the diaphragm causes wide opening of the choke valve, and at low ambient temperature causes less initial opening, followed by further opening of the choke valve as the engine warms up.

Changes in barometric pressure and/or temperature can adversely affect a number of engine functions. Apparatus is disclosed for controlling and modulating a number of engine functions, including carburetor idle fuel and main fuel supply, fuel enrichment during acceleration and wide open throttle operation, as well as vacuum applied to such vacuum motors associated with the engine as the carburetor choke, the spark advance and automatic transmission shift. Calibration features are provided for establishing a base condition of operation as well as individual calibration of all the various functions listed together with the ability to make base calibration changes by application of an external signal.

A dual switch is mounted in the wall of the water jacket of the engine so that one thermo switch responds to the engine heat and the other thermo switch responds to the ambient temperature. The switches are connected in series with a source of current and a heater in proximity to an expansible coil controlling the choke valve. The coil is adjacent a water jacket so that it is affected by engine heat. The engine heat responsive thermo switch remains closed until the engine temperature approaches a near-normal value. At low temperatures, the ambient switch is open, and it closes only after the choke is opened following a warm-up period. During cooling of the engine, the ambient switch remains closed down to a relatively low temperature, so that if the engine is ''''soaked,'''' the heater will be energized for quick opening of the choke, to relieve the ''''soak'''' condition. Another dual thermo switch may be similarly mounted in the wall of the water jacket and connected in a circuit for controlling the ignition advance means of the distributor.
