A through-conduit, double-wedging parallel seat gate valve. The valve has a monolithic body forming a spherical segment with a cylindrical flow passage and flange end connections. The body has a transverse chamber mounting a rectangular gate moved across the passage between opened and closed positions. The chamber has an obround cross section with parallel sides facing the sides of the gate and rounded ends facing the edges of the gate. Integral parallel guide surfaces on the body separate the rounded ends from the parallel sides, and these guide surfaces engage the edges of the gate. Replaceable seats about the flow passage seal to the sides of the gate. Upper and lower closure members are releasably secured on annular sealing surfaces on the body and enclose the gate within the chamber. The flanges and body can have the same radii as the bar stock from which the body is machined. The guide surfaces are tangents at the intersection of semicylindrical grooves in the parallel sides with the rounded ends. These grooves facilitate removal of the seats.

A gate valve structure having a hollow body with inlet and outlet conduits mounted thereon and opposed seat support members mounted on inner ends of the conduits. The opposed seat support members have seat pockets which are finish machined before insertion into the hollow body. The opposed seat support members are in a predetermined spaced relation to each other and they are welded in such spaced relation to the hollow body from a position within the hollow body. One arrangement includes inlet and outlet conduit sections welded to the hollow body and opposed inner conduit sections having the opposed seat support members thereon with the inner conduit sections welded to the inlet and outlet conduit sections from a position inside the conduits to form a continuation of the outer conduit sections. Another arrangement includes inlet and outlet conduits having seat support members welded and finish machined prior to assembly. These conduits are positioned inside the hollow body with the seat support members in a spaced relation and welded inside the hollow body. Annular grooves in the seat support members adjacent the seat pockets aid in stress relieving. A gate is movably mounted between the seat support members.A method of making a gate valve body includes fabricating and stress relieving a seat support assembly, then machining it to finished dimensions, then inserting the seat support assembly into a hollow body member. Next, the seat support assembly is welded inside the hollow body member. Local stress relieving of final welds in the body can be employed.

Apparatus (1) and process for treating particulate material or powder (33) of a size capable of being fluidized in a retort (31) mounted for rotation on a pair of end axles (18, 41). Retort (31) is mounted on a tilt frame (5) for tilting movement in a vertical plane. Gas conduits (18A, 18B) are mounted within an axle (18) for the supply and exhaust of gas for retort (31). A conduit (55) mounted within the other axle (41) permits particulate material to be passed into or out of the retort (31) as shown in FIG. 1B. A removable injection assembly (90, FIG. 10) is utilized for the injection of additional particulate material. A removable sampling assembly (95, FIG. 11) is utilized for removing a sample of the particulate material from the retort (31). As the retort (31) is rotated, particles of the particulate material are constantly intermingled with each other and the walls of the retort (31). Microwave energy as shown in FIGS. 13-14 may be utilized to heat or dry materials within the retort (31). A plenum (105H) and a permeable membrane (105R) may be provided in an end wall (105B) of a retort (105A) as shown in FIG. 17.

A process and apparatus for forming a hardened outer shell (40) on a refractory metal workpiece (36) preferably heated in a fluidized bed of metallic oxide particles (38) in an environment of an inert gas and a reactive gas with the reactive gas either oxygen or nitrogen. The workpieces (36) are heated in the fluidized bed to a temperature between 800.degree. F. and 1600.degree. F. for a period of over two hours to form hardened outer shell (40) in two layers (42, 44). Outer layer (42) is an oxide or nitride layer having a thickness (T1) between 10 microns and 25 microns. Inner layer (44) is a case hardened layer of the refractory metal having a thickness (T2) between 25 microns and 75 microns. In one embodiment (FIG. 3 ) workpieces (56) may be cold worked by peening from finely divided metal oxide particles (54) to provide a uniform surface texture for subsequent hardening.

Cage assembly (44) may be inserted within and removed from the inlet fluid passage (16) upon removal of the inlet seat (36) and retainer (42).
