Abstract: Embodiments of a wearable monitoring device system can include one or more dry ECG electrodes and a processor that can be configured with one or more algorithms for detecting atrial fibrillation (AF) from sensed ECG signals sensed by the one or more dry ECG electrodes, and optionally other signals. In some embodiments the algorithms include one or more AF detection algorithms and optionally a noise detection algorithm. In some embodiments the wearable monitoring device or a remote system that receives data from the wearable medical device may calculate and/or characterize AF burden from ECG signals sensed by the one or more dry ECG electrodes.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a method to determine reliable electrocardiogram (ECG) signal is described. The method includes receiving at least one ECG signal for a period of time from a patient. The method also includes analyzing the at least one ECG signal to determine a first heart rate using a first method and analyzing the at least one ECG signal to determine a second heart rate using a second method different from the first method. The method includes comparing the first and second heart rates to each other and classifying the at least one ECG signal as reliable when a reliability threshold is satisfied.

Abstract: Embodiments of a wearable cardioverter defibrillator (WCD) system are configured to monitor a patient's ECG for shockable arrhythmias and deliver a shock to the patient in response to such a detection. To monitor the patient's ECG with reduced signal noise to improve the system's performance, the system includes a cable assembly having: a signal line; an inner shield and an outer shield; an ECG electrode electrically connected to the signal line of the cable assembly; and an amplifier having first and second input nodes respectively connected to the signal line and the outer shield of the cable assembly. The amplifier's output node is electrically connected to the inner shield of the cable assembly to reduce the reactive load seen by the patient's heart in driving the ECG sensing circuitry, which reduces the noise on the ECG signal outputted by the amplifier.

Abstract: A WCD system is configured to monitor various characteristics of the WCD system including about the patient. The WCD system is further configured to transmit a notification of a notifiable event to responders that are outside a local area of the patient, and to silence the notification for any responder(s) that are inside the local area of the patient.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a wearable cardioverter defibrillator (WCD) is described. The WCD includes a support structure worn by a patient. A processor is coupled to the support structure. The WCD also includes a discharge circuit coupled to an energy storage module, the discharge circuit configured to discharge the stored electrical charge through a body of the patient. The wearable cardioverter defibrillator also includes a user interface housing at least one sensor and responsive to changes in device orientation. The processor is configured to detect a motion at the user interface and determine when the motion is patient-activated. When the motion is patient-activated, the processor determines a direction of rotation. The processor determines an orientation of a display at the user interface based on the direction of rotation and orients the display at the user interface to appear upright to the patient.

Abstract: A wearable cardioverter defibrillator (“WCD”) system may include an impedance detector configured to render an impedance signal of the patient. The WCD system may determine, from the impedance signal, a characteristic of breathing by the patient that can be used as a vital sign. The WCD system may determine, from at least the breathing characteristic, whether or not a shock criterion is met. If the shock criterion is met, the WCD system may control a discharge circuit to discharge a stored electrical charge through the patient. An advantage can be that the breathing characteristic may be used to determine whether or not a patient is experiencing a condition that requires defibrillation therapy, such as sudden cardiac arrest. Even more advantages can be had in discerning the state of the patient when the breathing characteristic is combined with other data, such as from a motion detector.
