A portable terminal having an audio pickup means that acquires sound, an absolute position detection unit that detects the absolute position of the portable terminal, a relative position detection unit that detects the relative position of the portable terminal, and a speech recognition and synthesis unit that recognizes the audio acquired by the audio pickup means as speech, is achieved with a simple configuration. A portable terminal (1) that exchanges data with a server (2) has disposed to the portable terminal an audio pickup means that acquires sound, an absolute position detection unit (1-1) that detects the absolute position of the portable terminal, a relative position detection unit (1-2) that detects the relative position of the portable terminal, and a speech recognition and synthesis unit (1-3) that recognizes the audio acquired by the audio pickup means as speech.

In a display device having a color filter, a color material dispersed layer having the function of absorbing light of specific wavelengths in the visible light beam region is provided on the optical path so that the light absorption peak of this color material dispersed layer in the visible light beam region is located in the range of ±30 nm from the overlap point in the spectral transmission properties of each color of the color filter. Further, the color material dispersed layer is provided on a filter as a constituent part of the back light of the display. This filter has, as its substrate, a thermoplastic resin having a thickness of 30-350 micrometers and has a transmission in the maximum absorption wavelength in the color material dispersed layer of not more than 75%. The back light has, as its light source, a fluorescent lamp comprising a three band tube, and its emission color is subjected to color correction by an auxiliary filter having an organic color material dispersed layer provided on the illuminating light path.

Coloring matters and filters for plasma display panels, which can effectively screen the neon emission radiated from plasma display panels. Squarylium compounds represented by the following formula (I): [in the formula (I), R is a halogen atom, an alkyl group which may have a substituent, an alkoxy group which may have a substituent, or an alkenyl group which may have a substituent, m is an integer of from 1 to 4, and n is an integer of from 0 to 4], and filters for plasma display panels, made by laminating layers containing these compounds with layers containing ultraviolet absorbers and, if necessary, providing additionally near infrared screening layers, antireflection layers and/or non-glare layers.

Abstract:
An anthraquinone dye and a liquid crystal composition containing the same are disclosed. The anthraquinone dye shows a cyan color and has excellent order parameter, solubility and stability. The liquid crystal composition is particularly used in an electro-optic cell, which is interposed between two facing electrode plates and permits the realization of good color displays utilizing the guest-host effect of a liquid crystal.

The object of the invention is to provide a diphenylsquarylium compound which has a sharp minimum value within the wavelength range of from 550 to 610 nm in the light transmittance curve and from which a filter causing no reduction of brightness of the visual field can be obtained when used by containing in a filter for display, and a filter for display which contains this diphenylsquarylium compound. Constructions of the invention are a diphenylsquarylium compound represented by the following general formula (I) and a filter for display which contains this diphenylsquarylium compound.

A squarilium compound represented by the following formula (I) and a liquid crystal composition containing the same are disclosed: ##STR1## wherein X and Y each represents ##STR2## wherein R.sup.1 represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group or a substituted or unsubstituted aralkyl group; R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 each represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group or a substituted or unsubstituted alkoxy group; R.sup.5 represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, an aralkyl group or an aryl group; ring A represents a cyclic alkylene; ring B represents a substituted or unsubstituted aromatic ring; and ring C represents a heterocyclic ring containing one or two of a nitrogen atom, an oxygen atom and a sulfur atom; with proviso that X and Y are not the same when either one of them represents ##STR3## and a liquid crystal composition containing the squarilium compound of the formula (I). The squarilium compound (I) are soluble in a wide variety of solvents and resistant to light, and their maximum absorption wavelengths in these solvents are in the ranges of from 700 to 900 nm.
