Abstract: Methods and devices for vector-based targeting of the human central thalamus (CT) to guide deep brain stimulation (DBS) are disclosed. In some examples, electrode(s) each with a plurality contacts are provided. A three-dimensional orientation of a dominant axis of a central lateral nucleus dorsal tegmental tract medial component (CL/DTTm) fiber bundle of a human subject is determined. The contacts of the electrode(s) are positioned in the subject's CT fibers in substantial alignment with the three-dimensional orientation. An electrical stimulus is applied to the contacts to selectively activate the CT fibers. The positioning and the applying are carried out to maximize activation of a central lateral nucleus and medial dorsal tegmental tract fiber pathway in the subject and to minimize activation of a centromedian-parafascicularis fiber pathway in the subject. Methods and devices for surgical planning involving for vector-based targeting of the human CT to guide DBS are also disclosed.

Abstract: The present technology provides compositions and methods for treating chronic kidney disease, end-stage renal disease, or diabetic nephropathy. The compositions comprise a nitrated lipid and an inhibitor of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. The methods comprise administering a nitrated lipid in combination with an inhibitor of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system to a subject in need thereof, in an amount effective to treat diabetic nephropathy, chronic kidney disease, and/or end-stage renal disease. The use of a nitrated lipid with an inhibitor of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system exhibits a synergistic effect in treating chronic kidney disease and diabetic nephropathy.

Abstract: Devices, systems, and methods are provided for controlling a quantity of cutting fluid dispensed for a cutting tool within a CNC or other machining system. The devices, systems, and methods may include controlling multiple fluids such that coolant, lubricant, or other fluids can be delivered at different locations, at different flow rates, have their flow rates changed independently, and/or have their flow rates changed dynamically during a machining operation. In some embodiments, a feedback loop or input may be provided to obtain and/or provide information regarding the machining operation—such as cutting force, cutting temperature, cutting friction, machining operation, tool in use, work piece geometry, and/or material—and automatically and/or independently modify the fluid flow rates. The fluid may be atomized with air or other gases to minimize the quantities of fluid used. Components in the system may be modular to allow the system to be used with existing and new machining technologies.

Abstract: An experimental melting curve is modeled as a sum of a true melting curve and background fluorescence. A deviation function may be generated based upon the experimental melting curve data and a model of a background signal. The deviation function may be generated by segmenting a range of the experimental curve into a plurality of windows. Within each window, a fit between the model of the background signal and the experimental melting curve data may be calculated. The deviation function may be formed from the resulting fit parameters. The deviation function may include background signal compensation and, as such, may be used in various melting curve analysis operations, such as data visualization, clustering, genotyping, scanning, negative sample removal, and the like. The deviation function may be used to seed an automated background correction process. A background-corrected melting curve may be further processed to remove an aggregation signal.
