Allyl carbamates are disclosed. The allyl carbamates are prepared by reacting an isocyanate with an allylic alcohol or alkoxylated allylic alcohol. Suitable isocyanates are selected from hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI), HDI biuret, dimer, HDI trimer, HDI allophanate, isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), IPDI trimer, IPDI allophanate, bis(isocyanatocyclohexyl)methane, and mixtures thereof. The allyl carbamates have at least two allyl functional groups per molecule. UV-curable and air-drying coatings formulated from the allyl carbamates show excellent chemical resistance and physical properties.

This invention relates to a process for preparing a dimer by the steps of: (a) cyclodimerizing a polyisocyanate in the presence of a dimerization catalyst which is covalently bound to an insoluble inorganic matrix by contacting said polyisocyanate with said catalyst at a temperature of between about 20 and about 135.degree. C. in a reaction to form an uretidione-containing cyclodimerized isocyanate wherein a portion of the isocyanate moieties comprising said polyisocyanate are converted to uretidione groups, and (b) separating said catalyst from said cyclodimerized isocyanate in order to stop said reaction after a desired amount of isocyanate moieties in said polyisocyanate have been converted to uretidione moieties.

This invention relates to a multi-step process for isolating a cyclotrimerized isocyanate from mixture containing said cyclotrimerized isocyanate plus an isocyanate oligomer which comprises the steps of: (a) contacting said mixture with a liquid solvent to provide a solvent-containing mixture, (b) extracting said solvent-containing mixture by liquid-liquid extraction to cause said solvent-containing mixture to elute into an extractate and a residue, wherein said extractate is a cyclotrimerized isocyanate that is essentially oligomer-free and is further characterized by having reduced viscosity relative to said solvent-containing mixture, and (c) separating uncyclotrimerized monomer from said extractate to provide a reduced viscosity trimer product that is essentially free of monomer. Also disclosed is the reduced-viscosity product produced by this process.

These polyuretidione polyurethanes are characterized by their relatively low solution viscosity, and the ability to provide a relatively high crosslink density in the final, cured film, and thereby, coatings with the excellent physical properties and resistance to chemical and environmental exposure of known polyurethane systems without the potential for worker exposure to toxic isocyanates. This invention also relates to a process for the production of these polyuretidiones and their use in pseudo-one and two component coating compositions.

This invention relates to a process for coating a substrate comprising contacting the substrate with a low volatile organics, moisture curable, two-component coating composition comprising an admixture of an A-side and a B-side, said A-side comprising an aliphatic polyisocyanate having an isocyanate index relative to the number of isocyanate-reactive groups in said coating composition of at least about 200, preferably at least about 300, more preferably at least about 500, said B-side comprising a tertiary amine catalyst and optionally an isocyanate-reactive compound selected from the group consisting of monoahls, polyols, imines, oxazolidines, and combinations thereof, said coating composition optionally containing a solvent in an amount of less than about 45%, based upon the weight of the polyisocyanate in said coating composition, said coating composition having a viscosity as measured by ZAHN cup 2 of less than about 200 seconds, said composition being essentially free of any volatile mono- and di-isocyanates, and said composition being moisture curable upon exposure to atmospheric moisture. Also claimed is the coating composition itself.
