摘要: A needle biopsy device has a suction source, an inner cannula, and an outer cannula. The inner cannula has a biopsy reservoir formed proximate the distal end thereof and also has a lumen formed therein. The lumen provides fluid communication from the suction source to the biopsy reservoir. The outer cannula is slidably disposed about the inner cannula and has a cutter formed at the distal end thereof. The outer cannula has a distal position wherein it substantially covers the biopsy reservoir and has a proximate position wherein the biopsy reservoir is substantially exposed. An actuating mechanism moves the outer cannula from the distal position to the proximate position thereof, facilitates the application of suction from the suction source to the biopsy reservoir and moves the outer cannula from the proximate position to the distal position thereof. Moving the outer cannula from the distal position to the proximate position thereof and creating suction that the biopsy reservoir causes a tissue sample to be pulled into the biopsy reservoir. Moving the outer cannula from the proximal position to the distal position thereof causes the cutter to cut the tissue sample from surrounding tissue and also captures the tissue sample within the biopsy reservoir.

摘要: An intracorporeal site marker has high ultrasound reflectivity, presents a substantial acoustic signature from a small marker, so as to avoid obscuring diagnostic tissue features in subsequent imaging studies, and can be readily distinguished from biological features. The biopsy site marker may include features to fix the marker to the biopsy site so as to resist migration from the biopsy cavity.

摘要: The invention is directed biopsy site markers and methods of marking a biopsy site, so that the location of the biopsy cavity is readily visible by conventional imaging methods, particularly by ultrasonic imaging. The biopsy site markers of the invention have high ultrasound reflectivity, presenting a substantial acoustic signature from a small marker, so as to avoid obscuring diagnostic tissue features in subsequent imaging studies, and can be readily distinguished from biological features. The several disclosed embodiments of the biopsy site marker of the invention have a high contrast of acoustic impedance as placed in a tissue site, so as to efficiently reflect and scatter ultrasonic energy, and preferably include gas-filled internal pores. The markers may have a non-uniform surface contour to enhance the acoustic signature. The markers have a characteristic form which is recognizably artificial during medical imaging. The biopsy site marker may be accurately fixed to the biopsy site so as to resist migration from the biopsy cavity when a placement instrument is withdrawn, and when the marked tissue is subsequently moved or manipulated.

摘要: A needle core biopsy instrument/extractor for extracting a tissue sample via needle aspiration is disclosed. The extractor comprises a first cannula having a sharpened, beveled cutting tip and biopsy reservoir formed on its distal end. The proximal end of the first cannula is in fluid communication with a conventional syringe such that when the plunger of the syringe is retracted via manipulation of the extractor, a vacuum is created within the biopsy reservoir of the first cannula. Axially mounted about the first cannula is a second cutting cannula which is designed and configured to selectively cover and uncover the distal end of the first cannula. A biasing member, preferably a spring, is provided to urge the second cannula forward about the distal end of the first cannula. The syringe, coaxially positioned first and second cannulas, and biasing member are contained within an introducer which is preferably designed and configured to be manipulated by one hand. The handle slide and lever of the device are oriented in such a way as to allow the retention of tissue via vacuum and the severing of the specimen by the second cannula to be exactly timed by cam operation.
