In an inverter transformer comprising a primary winding and secondary winding which are wound on a first and a second spool respectively and disposed in juxtaposing relationship.with each other with the axes of the first and second spools being substantially parallel to each other, and a pair of cores which are disposed in abutting relationship to each other so as to define a closed magnetic path, the primary and secondary windings being electromagnetically coupled to each other through the pair of cores, at least one of said cores being provided with a protuberance which is disposed in opposing relationship to the other core, with a small distance maintained therebetween, the protuberance being interposed between the primary winding and the secondary winding, the arrangement is made such that secondary-side minimum sectional area of that portion of the cores through which magnetic flux is permitted to pass, is given substantially by S.sub.1 K, where S.sub.1 is primary-side minimum sectional area of that portion of the cores through which magnetic flux is permitted to pass, and K is the electromagnetic coupling coefficient between the primary winding and the secondary winding.

The magnetic thin films are provided with an axis of easy magnetization directed in the direction of width of said magnetic foil belt. Further, the magnetic thin films are thicknesswise separated into a plurality of discrete layers by at least one intervening resistance layer having a resistivity in the range from 10.sup.2 .mu..OMEGA.. cm to 10.sup.6 .mu..OMEGA..cm. Alternatively, the core may be formed by plural pieces of magnetic foil belt comprising magnetic thin films deposited on a tape-like thin plate, said plurality pieces of magnetic foil belt being insulated from each other and provided in a laminated form.

An inductor and a switching means are combined in such a way that the storage of the energy in the inductor and the release of the energy stored in the inductor are repeatedly carried out, whereby the released energy is rectified and smoothed to obtain a DC output. The inductor is fabricated from a conductor comprising a wire coated with a thin magnetic film in such a way that the easy axis of said thin magnetic film is extended substantially in the longitudinal direction of the wire. Furthermore, a plurality of inductor and switching element pairs are provided and are switched in different phases, respectively.
