摘要: The invention contained herein provides solid-state breakover conduction illumination devices, displays and driving methods. Illumination devices may be fabricated as co-packaged devices or integrated devices using in-organic or organic illumination elements. AC breakover conduction displays are embodied in both small, tightly-integrated configurations as well as, large area discrete implementations. Driving methods employ initialization and resetting methods for subfield based operation; taking advantage of the stable high speed characteristics of solid-state breakover devices such as DIACs. A full-color high-resolution DIAC based display is presented.

摘要: An AC PDP incorporating the invention includes a first substrate having plural elongated address electrode structures, which include sets of color phosphors. A second substrate is opposed to the first substrate and encloses a dischargeable gas therebetween. The second substrate supports a plurality of scan loops and sustain loops that are interdigitated with the scan electrode loops. Gas discharges occur at intersections between address electrodes and both traces of a scan loop to which a scan voltage is applied and a single side of each adjacent sustain loop to which a sustain voltage is applied. This action creates wall charges at each of two subpixel sites for each color subpixel. Thereafter, sustain signals applied to sustain and scan electrode loops causes discharges at each of the dual subpixel sites at which wall charges exist. Electrically isolated contrast enhancement bars are placed within scan and sustain electrode loops and act to block ambient light from reflecting off the phosphor layer. Accordingly, ambient room contrast ratio of the PDP is enhanced due to the reduced reflection of the room light off the phosphor. Brightness reduction is minimized by the contrast bars being placed in the center of the loops where light is not produced.

摘要: The invention contained herein provides electrical circuits and driving methods to operate a memory cell comprising a capacitance coupled to a breakover conduction switch such as a thyristor, DIAC or one or more complementary transistor pairs. The memory cell comprises a cell capacitance for storing a memory state and for capacitively coupling an applied voltage to the switch. During operation, pulses are applied to write, read or maintain the cell's memory state. An illumination cell comprises an LED, OLED or electroluminescent material in series with each memory cell. Breakover conduction charge passes through the switch and the emissive element to charge the cell capacitance. A memory array of breakover conduction memory cells may be organized into rows and columns for reading and writing an addressable array memory cells. An organic light emitting display memory array may be fabricated using organic light emitting devices and/or materials.

摘要: An energy efficient driver circuit for driving a display panel having panel electrodes and panel capacitance includes an inductor means coupled to the panel electrodes; a driving voltage source; a voltage supply for providing a supply voltage of a magnitude which is greater than the driving voltage; a first switch device for selectively coupling the driving voltage to the inductor in response to a rising input signal transition, the input signal transition commencing a first state wherein a first current flow occurs through the inductor to charge the panel capacitance, the inductor causing the panel electrodes to rise to a voltage in excess of the driving voltage, at which point the first current flow reaches zero; and a second switch device for selectively coupling the voltage supply to the inductor and panel electrodes. A switch control is responsive to current flow in the inductor and is operative during the first state to initially maintain the second switch device in an open condition, and thereafter, in response to signals derived from the inductor, to cause a closure of the second switch device at a time which enables said second switch device to be fully conductive when the first current flow reaches zero, whereby the supply voltage source during a succeeding second state supplies current to both the panel electrodes and flyback current to said inductor. A like circuit is similarly operational on a falling input signal transition.

摘要: A device operating in accordance with the invention receives data respective of an image to be displayed, determines the illumination load requirement for at least one illumination period according to the image data and adjusts the operation of the illumination driver according to the illumination load requirement such that a driving current is maintained between an electrode charging phase and an illumination phase according to the illumination load requirement. The invention seeks to negate the driving electrode inductance between the driving circuit and the load by maintaining an electrical current within the driving electrode between the charging phase and the conductive phase.
