摘要:
A nuclear density gauge and test method is provided for measuring bulk density, especially of a cylindrically shaped sample such as asphalt paving material. The gauge comprises a base; a sample holder carried by the base and having a surface configured for receiving and holding a first generally planar end of the cylindrically shaped sample; a plate mounted in proximity to said sample holder; and at least three sources of gamma radiation located in said plate adjacent the sample holder. The sources are positioned in spaced-apart relation from one another for emitting gamma radiation from at least three spaced-apart locations into said one end of the sample. Each of the sources comprises an isotope having a characteristic primary energy. A detector is mounted to the base and is positioned adjacent the opposite end of the cylindrically shaped sample for receiving gamma radiation which has penetrated the sample. Means is provided cooperating with the detector for calculating the bulk density of the sample based upon the gamma radiation counts by the detector. Preferably the detector comprises a scintillation detector, and the means for calculating the bulk density of the sample includes an analyzer connected to the scintillation detector for detecting gamma radiation in a predetermined energy spectrum, which preferably falls within the range of 0.1 MeV to 2 MeV.

The subject matter described herein includes methods, systems, and computer program products for measuring the density of a material. According to one aspect, a material property gauge includes a nuclear density gauge for measuring the density of a material. A radiation source adapted to emit radiation into a material and a radiation detector operable to produce a signal representing the detected radiation. A first material property calculation function may calculate a value associated with the density of the material based upon the signal produced by the radiation detector. The material property gauge includes an electromagnetic moisture property gauge that determines a moisture property of the material. An electromagnetic field generator may generate an electromagnetic field where the electromagnetic field sweeps through one or more frequencies and penetrates into the material. An electromagnetic sensor may determine a frequency response of the material to the electromagnetic field across the several frequencies.

Nuclear gauges and method of configuration and methods of calibrations of the nuclear gauges are provided. The nuclear gauges are used in measuring the density and/or moisture of construction-related materials. The nuclear gauge can include a gauge housing having a vertical cavity therethrough and at least one radiation detector located within the housing. The nuclear gauge can include a vertically moveable source rod and a radiation source operatively positioned within a distal end of the source rod.

A system for determining a property of a paving-related material is provided. Such a system comprises a measuring device for selectively and directly measuring the property. A computer device is capable of executing a software program product and communicating with the measuring device. The computer device directs the measuring device to measure the property of the paving-related material according to a parameter determined by the software program product, and to receive data comprising the measured property from the measuring device. A communication element operably engaged between the measuring device and the computer device allows communication therebetween. The communication element is configured to allow the computer device to be spaced apart from the measuring device, thereby allowing the computer device to be prepared, to include the parameter and to manipulate the data, in spaced apart relation with respect to the measuring device. An associated method is also provided.

A nuclear density gauge and test method is provided for measuring density material in a relatively thin zone beneath a surface of the material. The gauge comprises a gauge housing and a substantially planar base on said gauge housing adapted to be positioned on a surface of the material sample. A gamma radiation source having a characteristic primary energy and an activity of no more than 100 microcurie is mounted within the housing and cooperates with the base for emitting gamma radiation through the base and into an underlying material sample. An energy selective gamma radiation detector is mounted within the gauge housing and in laterally spaced apart relation from the gamma radiation source. The gamma radiation detector is operable for quantifying the energy level of the detected gamma radiation. Shielding is provided within the gauge housing between the source and the detector for preventing gamma radiation from passing directly from said source to the detector. An analyzer is connected to the detector for detecting gamma radiation counts in a predetermined energy spectrum having a lower limit of 0.1 MeV or greater and an upper limit which is less than the characteristic primary energy of said source. The density of the sample is calculated based upon the gamma radiation counts obtained by the analyzer within the predetermined energy spectrum.
