Abstract:
A method for delivering fluids, drugs, or medications to a patient's eye, and a system or apparatus for implementing the method, is disclosed. The system and method comprises the use of a corneal sponge to be deposited onto the cornea of the patient's eye while the patient's eyelids are maintained in open positions, and a scleral contact lens is disposed onto the sponge. The scleral lens has an irrigation fluid supply tube fluidically connected thereto for supplying a fluid, drug, or medication to the sponge which is saturated with the fluid, drug, or medication. Once the sponge and lens are inserted onto the corneal region of the eye, the patient's eyelids are closed thereby trapping and maintaining the sponge and lens upon the corneal region of the eye so as to permit the fluid, drug, or medication to be continuously supplied and applied to the corneal region of the eye.

The present invention relates generally to a medicinal solution, and more particularly to a medicinal solution which is to be continuously or pulse-delivered for the purpose of treating various ocular diseases, conditions, or maladies, such as keratoconus, infectious keratitis, severe inflammatory conditions, and ocular surface neoplasia. In particular, the medicinal solution comprises the combination of a medication for treating one of the aforenoted or similar diseases, conditions, or maladies, and an anesthetic for rendering the patient comfortable during the treatment procedure.

An apparatus and method for reducing intraocular pressure in a patient's eye is provided. A deformable intraocular member having a relaxed state with a relaxed profile having a first width, a first energized state with a first profile having a second width, and a second energized state with a second profile having a third width is provided. The deformable intraocular member relaxed state width is greater than the width of a lens capsule which surrounds a lens of the patient's eye prior to cataract surgery. The second energized state width is greater than the patient's lens capsule width after cataract surgery and smaller than the width in the relaxed state. The deformable intraocular member in the second energized state is configured to urge deformation of the lens capsule to thereby promote opening of a trabecular meshwork and canal of Schlemm of the patient's eye to promote drainage of aqueous humor from an anterior chamber and reduce intraocular pressure in the patient's eye.

A viscoelastic solution including a buffered solution, 0.01-10% chondroitin sulfate, 0.01-10% hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, and 0.01-10% sodium hyaluronate, pH adjusted to 6.0-8.0 at a osmolarity between 200-400 mOsmol/L. The buffered solution can be HEPES buffered minimal essential medium (MEM), phosphate buffered saline (PBS), or buffered balanced salt solution. A cell growth factor or cell growth supplement can also be included in the solution.

The additive for the solutions is composed of a balanced salt solution containing dextrose supplemented with chondroitin sulfate. Other chemical compositions can supplement the additive.

Intraocular lens including loop haptic members each affixed at more than one point to a soft skirt of an optic or to a soft optic for torsional rigidity of the loop haptic member and for preventing loop rotation or pull out in an optic. The loop haptic members each include a main loop haptic member, and two branch members proceeding from the main loop haptic member to affix in securement holes in the edge or surface of an optic. The loops' securement end points include conically shaped end like members which engage within the soft portion of the IOL.
Abstract:
Intraocular lens implant including an optic such as a plano-convex lens, a plurality of outwardly extending loops, and at least one key-hole affixed to one of the loops. In one embodiment, a plano-convex posterior chamber lens implant is provided with at least one key-hole loop in one of the two loops for turn-key insertion by locking a turn-key insertion instrument into a key-hole where the key-hole is at one end of one or both of the loops. The key locking into the key-hole provides for turn-key insertion of the loop with stable, secure, fixation, and control of the superior loop providing movement in all directions and all planes. This provides for rotation of the loop to rotate the lens implant posterior to the iris or into the capsular bag during a superior loop insertion technique.
