The present invention minimizes noise pops due to Rayleigh fades by controlling receiver gain relative to the average received signal strength so that only a predetermined level of limiting occurs prior to the recovery of the audio information. The amount of limiting is selected so that a significant Rayleigh fade will cause the amplified IF signal to drop below the limiting level and enter the linear amplification region. During the fade the magnitude of the signal provided to the discriminator decreases thereby decreasing the discriminator's output and minimizing the magnitude of the audio pop. Additional minimization of the subject noise pops is achieved by utilizing a discriminator which has a square law transfer characteristic so that the recovered audio level will decrease 2 dB for every 1 dB decrease in input signal level.

A battery saving system for a portable duplex communications system such as a portable telephone system includes a voice operated transmitter within each portable unit which automatically transmits radio signals upon application of audio signals thereto and discontinues transmission upon termination of the audio signals to conserve battery power. A companion receiver includes a fast acting squelch system to substantially eliminate the noise bursts occurring between transmissions by said portable unit.

A frequency-hopping cordless telephone system is described which adds digitized audio to a pseudorandom frequency hopping pattern for voice encryption. The randomly selected start point of a very long pseudoramic pattern generator is transferred to the handset by way of an infrared path at each off-hook. In addition, the infrared path is used to synchronize the clocks of the handset and the associated base module when the cordless telephone is in an on-hook position.

A Rayleigh fader for use with signals such as single-sideband and AM radio signals applies those signals to a 90-degree power divider. Each of the outputs of the power divider is taken to a separate double balanced mixer. Each separate double balanced mixer receives a mixing input from a noise source that includes a voltage-to-current converter. Mixed outputs of the two double balanced mixers are re-combined in a power combiner to produce a Rayleigh faded output.
