The present invention provides a sunless tanning substrate having one or more sunless tanning enhancers, which adjust the rate of color development and/or adjust or customize the color developed on the skin. The present invention further provides a method of sunless tanning comprising the step of using the sunless tanning substrate of the present invention either prior to application, simultaneously with application, after application, or any combinations thereof, of one or more sunless tanning actives or agents to the skin. The present invention also provides a sunless tanning kit that includes one or more of the sunless tanning substrates.

The present invention provides a base composition that allows for the formulation of non-irritating cosmetic and/or dermatological compositions. The base composition includes one or more of electrolyte, buffer, mild preservative, lubricant, or any combinations thereof. It is preferred that one or more of the above components are eye-safe and/or eye-compatible. The present invention also provides photoprotective cosmetic and/or dermatological compositions that include the base composition and one or more sunscreen active components and are non-irritating to mammalian eyes.

Topically applicable, water-resistant cosmetic or dermatological compositions well suited for the UV-photoprotection of human skin and/or hair comprising an effective UV-photoprotecting amount of: (a) at least one UV screening agent from various classes and particularly effect mixtures thereof; and, (b) at least one random terpolymer; and, optionally, (c) other cosmetically acceptable ingredients. The various classes of UV-protecting compounds or UV sunscreens of special interest are selected from the groups b1 sparingly soluble micronized organic UV absorber, b2 Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine, b3 at least one oil soluble organic UV absorber, b4 at least one inorganic UV absorber and b5 at least one water soluble UV absorber further defined herein.The present invention also relates to personal care compositions comprising at least one random terpolymer and other cosmetically acceptable ingredients.

The present invention relates to in vitro methods for determining efficacy of topical compositions on various skin color types. These methods involve providing an artificial skin apparatus configured to approximate the color and diffuse reflectance characteristics of a predetermined human skin color type. The artificial skin apparatus includes an artificial skin substrate combined with a color background, with the color background correlating to the human skin color type. A topical composition of interest is applied to the artificial skin substrate of the artificial skin apparatus and then pre-irradiated. The pre-irradiated topical composition is then analyzed using relevant experimental techniques or assays for at least one efficacy parameter, including, for example, anti-ageing, photoprotective, sun protective, UVA/UVB protective, UVAI protective, photo stabilizing, and photosensitizing activities and action mechanisms of the topical composition on various skin color types. Also provided is an artificial skin apparatus and kit for use with the in vitro method.

There is provided a composition comprising one or more photoactive compounds and one or more optimization agents. Surprisingly, the composition requires a small amount of optimization agent to efficiently optimize the polarity, critical wavelength, SPF, PFA, Star Rating, photostability, or any combinations thereof, of the composition. Subsequently, an efficient sunscreen composition is achieved.

The method includes the steps of: determining in vivo SPF; determining in vitro SPF based on the sunscreen's absorbance spectrum in the UV region; normalizing the absorbence spectrum based on integration area of UVA1; and calculating the PFA-PPD in vitro.
