    Abstract: A vacuum furnace is provided embodying means operable for improving the ability of one to visually inspect work undergoing heating while under vacuum. The vacuum furnace includes a vacuum chamber and a muffle furnace housed therewithin. The muffle furnace includes a muffle chamber adapted for receiving a work object in supporting relation therewithin upon which some form of work operation involving the use of heat is to be performed. Access to the muffle chamber is provided through a muffle door which is suitably mounted at one end of the muffle furnace for movement between an open and a closed position relative to the aforementioned one end of the muffle furnace. To facilitate the location of a desired field of vision into the interior of the muffle chamber of the muffle furnace, the vacuum furnace is provided with improved visual sighting means. The latter means includes a transparent or translucent window which is suitably provided in the muffle door wherein to be operable to enable one to see into the muffle chamber. Aligned with but spaced from the window in the muffle door is a viewing port provided in the vacuum chamber door. The latter door has an open and a closed position and is operable to provide access therethrough to the muffle door of the muffle furnace and thereby to the interior of the muffle chamber. For purposes of opening the door of the vacuum chamber, a handle is provided in which an annular ring comprising a sighting hole is suitably located so as to be visually aligned with the viewing port in the vacuum chamber. The latter viewing port in turn is visually alignable with the window in the muffle door when the muffle furnace door and the vacuum chamber door are in their closed positions whereby the aforedescribed three sighting means function to provide a desired field of vision into the interior of the muffle furnace chamber.

    Abstract: A casting machine adapted for the manufacture of precision investment castings of the type used in dental applications has a burner arm assembly including a torch and means adapted to sealingly engage and pressurize a mold assembly. The mold assembly is positioned on a support member and is heated by the burner assembly, after which it is raised against the burner assembly. Vacuum is drawn through the support member, and molten metal is caused to flow from the crucible portion into the mold portion of the mold assembly, and by also supplying gas under positive pressure to the crucible portion to facilitate such flow. Control means extinguish the burner assembly and operate the vacuum as well as the produce movement of the support member.

    Abstract: A dental casting alloy contains 40-60 percent of a precious metal component which is either palladium alone or a mixture of palladium with platinum in which the platinum is in the amount of up to 12 percent but not in excess of 25 percent of the palladium content. The principal non-precious metal component is 20-50 percent cobalt or is 20-59 percent of a mixture of cobalt and nickel wherein the nickel is in the range of up to 25 percent and not in excess of the cobalt content. An essential modifier is provided by 1-8 percent indium, 1-3 percent tin or 1-8 percent of a mixture of tin and indium wherein the tin does not exceed 3 percent. The alloy may contain as optional additives up to 5 percent zinc, up to 5 percent iron, up to 5 percent tungsten, up to 2 percent ruthenium, up to 2 percent rhodium and up to 10 percent molybdenum. The alloys have a thermal coefficient of expansion of 14.5-15.2 X 10 6 percent per degree Centigrade up to 600* Centigrade. A tooth structure employs a base cast from the alloy upon which is firmly bonded a ceramic coating.
