Abstract: A dual-mode switchable liquid-crystal window can control both radiant energy flow and privacy. The modes are selected by using different voltage frequencies. A dichroic dye is doped to enable modulation of transmission of the window. In the absence of an applied voltage, the window is transparent without haze. When a high-frequency (e.g., 1 kHz) voltage is applied, the liquid crystal and doped dye molecules inside the window reorient uniformly under dielectric interactions. The material becomes optically absorbing. The transmittance decreases, but the haze does not change. In this mode, the window can control radiant energy flow through the window. When a low-frequency (50 Hz) voltage is applied, the liquid crystal and doped dye molecules are switched into a micron-sized polydomain structure under flexoelectric interactions. The material becomes optically scattering and absorbing. The scenery behind the window is blocked. In this mode, privacy can be controlled. This dual-mode switchable window is suitable for architectural and automobile windows.

Chiral dopants can also include bioreachable materials that are further modified by chemical synthetic steps. Chiral dopants as discussed herein can include biomolecules such as glycyrrhetinic acid (1), S-naringenin (2), shikimic acid (3), alpha-phellandrene (4), betulin (5), malic acid (6), valencene (7), or nootkatone (8), and any stereoisomers or chemically modified derivatives thereof. The disclosure further shows optical properties of such compounds in a liquid-crystalline material.

Abstract: Sintering is an important issue in creating crystalline metal oxides with high porosity and surface area, especially in the case of high-temperature materials such as metal aluminates. Herein we report a rationally designed synthesis of metal aluminates that diminishes the surface area loss due to sintering. Metal aluminate (e.g. MeAl2O4or MeAlO3−Me=Mg, Mn, Fe, Ni, Co, Cu, La, or Ce; or mixture thereof) supported on γ-Al2O3 with ultralarge mesopores (up to 30 nm) was synthesized through microwave-assisted peptization of boehmite nanoparticles and their self-assembly in the presence of a triblock copolymer (Pluronic P123) and metal nitrates, followed by co-condensation and thermal treatment. The resulting materials showed the surface area up to about 410 m2·g−1, porosity up to about 2.5 cm3·g−1, and very good thermal stability. The observed enhancement in their thermomechanical resistance is associated with the faster formation of the metal aluminate phases. The nanometer scale path diffusion and highly defective interface of γ-alumina facilitate the counter diffusion of MeX+ and Al3+ species and further formation of the metal aluminate phase.

Abstract: A method for aligning molecular orientations of liquid crystals and/or polymeric materials into spatially variant patterns uses metamasks. When non-polarized or circularly polarized light is transmitted through or reflected by the metamasks, spatially varied polarization direction and intensity patterns of light can be generated. By projecting the optical patterns of the metamasks onto substrates coated with photoalignment materials, spatially variant molecular orientations encoded in the polarization and intensity patterns are induced in the photoalignment materials, and transfer into the liquid crystals. Possible designs for the metamask use nanostructures of metallic materials (e.g., rectangular nanocuboids of metallic materials arrayed on a transparent substrate).

Abstract: Systems and methods for generating real-time, personalized recommendations are disclosed. In one embodiment, a method operates upon an electronic data collection organized as a network of vertices and edge connections between the vertices. The method provides the recommendations includes iteratively traversing across edges that satisfy search criteria to a new set of vertices and filtering each new set of vertices to satisfy the search criteria. At the conclusion of the traversing and filtering, a final set of vertices represents the recommended entities. In some embodiments, a control vector describes a sequence of relationships between a requester and the items to be recommended. The method can assign scores to candidate recommendations and select the recommendations having the highest scores. Advantageously, the method provides flexibility and rapid execution of recommendation queries without the need to precompute intermediate results.
