In an electronic keyboard instrument (1) being an example of a musical performance apparatus having a musical operation unit, a unique musical performance apparatus is formed by an outer face of its exterior (2), and part or a whole of the outer face of the exterior (2) is formed as a temperature sensitive discolorable layer, for example, as shown by the hatched outer faces of upper side panels (22), lower side panels (23), and a back panel (25), so that at least part of the exterior (2) changes in color according to a change in environmental temperature or a temperature change caused by radiant heat by illumination of lights (34). In order to forcibly discolor the temperature sensitive discolorable layer of the exterior (2), it is preferable that heaters or Peltier modules are incorporated in the exterior (2) and electricity is supplied thereto for enabling heating, or heating and cooling.

A percussion detecting apparatus and an electronic percussion instrument, which are capable of not only providing excellent percussion feeling, but also visually indicating a percussion pattern of a beat applied to a percussion surface, so as to serve for percussion practice as well as to increase interest in the percussion practice. A head of the percussion detecting apparatus is formed of an air-permeable material and has a light transmitting property. The head includes a percussion surface. A drum shell supports the head. A head sensor detects a beat applied to the percussion surface of the head and outputs a beat signal indicative of the sensed beat. A light radiating part is disposed on an opposite side from the percussion surface of the head so as to perform visual indication corresponding to a percussion pattern of the beat applied to the percussion surface, at least through the percussion surface, based on the beat signal output from the head sensor.

A keyboard apparatus which is capable of imparting a natural key depression feeling with a definite and positive load change, with a simplified construction. A key touch feeling-imparting mechanism imparts a predetermined key touch feeling to a key when it is depressed. The key touch feeling-imparting mechanism is comprised of a receiving part provided on a support member, and an elastic engaging unit that has one end thereof held by a key operating part of an associated key and another end thereof slidably engaged with the receiving part. The elastic engaging unit is disposed such that the elastic engaging unit is bent during a forward stroke of key depression caused by a key depressing operation to give a reaction force to the associated key, and the elastic engaging unit suddenly decreases in an amount of bend thereof due to a change in a sliding frictional state between the other end thereof and the receiving part during the forward stroke of key depression, to thereby decrease the reaction force given to the associated key.

A sensing device is constructed by a sensor case which is attached to a bottom surface of a footwear (e.g., sole of a shoe) and which contains a piezoelectric sensor, a sensor fixing member, a disc plate pressure member and an annular elastic member. The sensor fixing member has elastic deformability so that the sensor fixing member is located to face with the disc plate pressure member with an air gap in which the sensor fixing member is capable of deforming within a limit of elasticity thereof. Thus, it is possible to perform musical tone control in response to an output of the piezoelectric sensor when a foot motion is applied to the footwear. In addition, a musical tone control apparatus of a percussion instrument type is constructed using a pad unit stored in a pad storage portion of an upper case. Herein, the pad unit is constructed by a pad skin unit and a sensing unit. The pad skin unit has a beat surface to be beaten, while the sensing unit contains a piezoelectric sensor, a sensor fixing member and a radial pressure member. Both of the sensor fixing member and the disc plate pressure member (or radial pressure member) are assembled together in such a way that center parts thereof are securely fixed to each other, so the piezoelectric sensor is capable of producing a same output in response to same external force (e.g., foot step force or beat force), regardless of directions to apply such force.

A detector is provided which generates detection signal that represents a value varying in response to the movement of a key operated on a keyboard. The key operating style employed for the operated key is reflected in subtle, dynamic action occurring in connection with the operated key during depression of the key. For instance, if the key operating style for the operated key has more staccato factor or characteristic, then the action of the operated key will present nonlinear characteristics relatively remarkably. Thus, the key operating style for the operated key can be determined on the basis of time-varying values of the detection signal, and by controlling tone depending on the determined key operating style, it is possible to achieve good-quality tone control, well reflecting subtle differences in key operating styles such as staccato, tenuto and the like, which is difficult to achieve with the conventional touch control techniques.

In construction of an electronic musical instrument having plural musical tone controllers such as keys, push buttons and an expression pedal unit, a number of pulses are generated depending on the extent of movement of each controller on output lines whose number is smaller than that of the pulses so generated and musical tone control parameters such as tone volume, tone color and tonal pitch are changed in multi-stage fashion in response to the pulses generated. Generation of musical tones is assured whilst well reflecting delicate change in player's emotion via subtle key touch control.

A keyboard assembly for an electronic musical instrument is provided, which is capable of having touch inputs to a key from a finger of a player reflected in his power of expression with higher fidelity even when the single key is successively depressed to repeatedly generate the same tone. A plurality of mass members are each disposed to be pivotally driven in response to depression of the corresponding key. A support device pivotally supports the keys and the mass members. A plurality of musical tone instruction devices provided respectively for the keys each instruct generation and damping of a musical tone in response to depression of a corresponding key, and are each comprised of a first sensor and a second sensor for generating a key event during a stroke of the corresponding key in response to depression thereof or in response to pivotal movement of the corresponding mass member responsive to the depression of the key. The first sensor is activated in a first half of the key stroke to determine timing for damping of the musical tone, and the second sensor in a second half of the key stroke to determine timing for generation of the musical tone and further determine timing for determining a key velocity depending on a position of the key during the stroke relative to the support device.
