摘要: A fiber-optic temperature sensor with a cantilever beam including two different material strips with different thermal expansion coefficients, the cantilever beam having a reflective surface on an end of the cantilever beam, an optical fiber probe including a transmitting multimode optical fiber and at least one receiving multimode optical fiber for receiving reflected light from the reflective surface. Temperature changes at the sensor are indicated by a change in reflected light coupled into the receiving multimode optical fiber due to lateral displacement of the edge of the reflective surface caused by bending of the cantilever beam. Some embodiments have additional reference receiving fibers for compensation for noise, changes in gap length, and other factors.

摘要: A fiber optic sensor for detecting acceleration or displacement includes a fiber optic probe with a multimode transmitting optical fiber, a multimode receiving optical fiber and a edge reflector spaced apart from the fiber probe. The reflector moves in a transverse direction substantially normal to the longitudinal axis of the fiber optic probe, so the amount of light received by the receiving fiber indicates a relative acceleration or a relative displacement of the reflective surface with respect to the fiber probe in the transverse direction of motion of the edge of the reflector. The reflector can be mounted on a cantilever beam. The sensor can have one transmitting fiber, two receiving fiber, and a reflector with two edges, each edge partially covering one of the receiving fibers. A triaxial sensor system has at least two two-fiber sensors.

摘要: The acoustic noise monitor determines acoustic sound levels radiated or stered to an exterior or interior fluid space of a structure such as an enclosed structure by measuring a condition, such as strain level, of the structure itself rather than by directly measuring the fluid itself. From the strain or other condition measured on the structure, the acoustic sound levels can be calculated with the Helmholtz integral. The sensors on the structure are preferably spaced so that non-radiating high wave-number motions of the structure are averaged out. The acoustic noise monitor can be used with submarines, jet aircraft, cars, or the like.

摘要: An optical fiber which includes a light transmitting center portion, a prcting layer and a stress preventing layer. The protecting layer concentrically surrounds the center portion and the stress preventing layer concentrically surrounds the center portion and is positioned between the protecting layer and the center portion. The stress preventing layer has a Young's Modulus substantially lower than the Young's Modulus of the protecting layer. The optical fiber can be used in a sensor, wherein the sensor includes an encapsulant and the fiber is embedded in the encapsulant. The embedded fiber is arranged in a pancaked spiral configuration in the encapsulant. Alternatively, the embedded fiber can be arranged to form a plurality of sequential loops. The plurality of sequential loops are then arranged in the same plane as a spiral, where each of the plurality of sequential loops are perpendicular to the plane. A decoupler is also provided for attaching the sensor to a structure, to reduce stretching motion affecting the sensor.

摘要: A interferometric planar and linear fiber optic sensor system comprised of a sensor element and a reference element. In the planar fiber optic sensor system the sensor and reference fibers are shaped in loops circularly and uniformly, heat treated or bonded together and embedded in a spiral pattern within a low Bulk Modulus and Young's Modulus elastomer encapsulant. The invention results in high and frequency independent sensitivity which minimizes acceleration effects. For the linear sensor, the sensing fiber is shaped in loops forming a linear chain which is embedded in an appropriate low bulk modulus elastomeric encapsulant. The reference fiber is shaped in loops around a cylindrical aluminum mandrel within which the input and output fiber cables and couplers are encapsulated in a high bulk modulus material epoxy resin. In both the planar and linear forms, the sensing and reference fiber may be of equal length, however, the reference fiber may be of a shorter length when a coherent light source is utilized.
