Abstract:
A therapeutic or prophylactic treatment method of ischemia, such as due to myocardial infarction, by administering thrombopoietin, alone or in combination with other drugs, to a patient suffering from or at risk of cardiac injury, such as myocardial ischemia. The thrombopoietin is administered in a concentration such that the subject's platelet count or production of platelets is not significantly affected.

Abstract:
A method is provided for forming fibrin coatings on a substrate, such as device for implantation in a body. The fibrin coatings are dried to provide a fibrin coating having the ability to be stored for extended periods before use. To provide coatings having high shear force resistance, the substrate is contacted first with thrombin and second with fibrinogen.
Abstract:
A method for percutaneous sealing of punctures in arterial and venous blood vessels is provided. After catheterization of any vessel or organ for diagnostic or interventional procedures or endoscopic or orthopedic procedures involving the intentional puncture and penetration of a vessel wall, or the accidental puncture of a vessel wall, separate solutions containing fibrinogen and thrombin, respectively, are introduced into the tissue surrounding the puncture site. The solutions are allowed to mix forming a semisolid gel at the time of application at the puncture site. The gel further hardens around the site to seal the puncture closed preventing the leakage of blood. Solutions of antibiotics and epinephrine as well as agents that slow clot breakdown may be included in the mixture. An apparatus for accomplishing the method is also disclosed.
Abstract:
A three-state, two-output R.F. power divider is configured as a microstrip device having an input port and first and second output ports. Between these three ports there is disposed a substantially T-shaped microstrip transmission line structure such that the input port is coupled to a base portion of the T-shaped structure and the first and second output ports are coupled to opposite ends of a top portion of the T-shaped structure. A substantially U-shaped microstrip transmission line structure is intercoupled with the T-shaped structure such that end portions of the U-shaped structure are coupled to the top portion of the T-shaped structure and a bottom portion of the U-shaped structure is coupled to the base portion of the T-shaped structure. A first PIN diode is coupled between a first location of the T-shaped structure and a ground plane brassboard underlying the dielectric layer on which the microstrip metalization is formed. Second and third PIN diodes are coupled between second and third respective locations of the U-shaped structure and the ground plane. Power is selectively coupled from the input port and the two output ports by contollably biasing the shunting action of the the three PIN diodes, such that two diodes operate as shunts, while the other diode remains open.
Abstract:
An apparatus for and method of heat curing elastomeric electrical insulation on a central electrical conductor of an electrical cable is provided and the apparatus includes an outer housing which is adapted to contain means for curing the exterior portion of the insulation from its outer portion inwardly and an electrical induction coil for curing the insulation from its inner portion outwardly. The coil is supported concentrically within the housing with the coil being adapted to receive the conductor therethrough with its insulation thereon and the coil serves to heat the conductor which in turn transmits heat to the inner portion of the insulation to provide the heat curing thereof from the inner portion radially outwardly. A magnetic flux shield is provided between the housing and the coil and serves to provide a path of least resistance for the lines of magnetic flux generated by the coil to thereby assure efficient operation of the induction coil yet without detrimental heating of the outer housing.
Abstract:
An apparatus for inducing vibratory oscillations in an airfoil is provided to simulate the dynamic aeroelastic interaction between the airfoil and a gas flow field. The apparatus includes first means for supporting the airfoil during inducement of the vibrations and second means movable in response to variations in magnetic flux to rotate the airfoil about first and second axes. Third means are provided for generating a variable magnetic flux field in response to an electrical control signal provided by fourth means.

Abstract:
In the production of snacks such as chips from farinaceous dough, the dough is extruded into a ribbon, rope, web or the like which is partially fried and then cut into pieces. The pieces are further fried or processed to form the snacks.
Abstract:
The present invention provides an apparatus for transferring knitted fabric from needles of a first knitting gauge to needles of a second knitting gauge. A row of parallel, elongate points are provided each being arranged parallel to one another and secured at each end to a movable frame. The bands pass through respective slots in two trick bars with the points being located between the two bars so that movement of the bands in unison carries the points from one trick bar to the other. If the slots in the respective trick bars are at the two selected knitting gauge then passage of the bands through the slots adjusts the spacing of the points from one gauge to the other.
