Abstract:
A novel anion exchange polymer is provided. A method of making the anion exchange polymer includes reacting a tertiary amine, an acid inhibitor and a polyepoxide to form a quaternary ammonium monomer and polymerizing the quaternary ammonium monomer in the presence of a catalyst. The exchange polymer is prepared without using alkyl halides and can be used to make improved ion exchange materials that are chemically resistant and non-fouling.
Abstract:
A caliper-type brake assembly for a bicycle, comprising at least one pair of opposed, generally complementarily configured elongate brake arm levers. Each brake arm lever supports adjacent a first end a bearing surface and adjacent a second, opposite end a braking pad to be urged against a sidewall of a wheel rim to be braked. Pivotal support means supports each brake arm lever on the bicycle adjacent the wheel rim and is disposed between the first and second ends of each brake arm lever, causing each brake arm lever to function as a first class lever. At least one pair of complementarily configured crank arm levers each has a first arm, a second arm, and a pivotal support adjacent an end of the first arm. Brake actuating devices secured adjacent the end of the second arm of each crank arm lever pivots the crank arm levers simultaneously about their pivotal support. Bearings supported on each crank arm lever intermediate its opposite ends engages the bearing surface of an associated brake arm lever causing each crank arm lever to function as a second class lever. Rotation of the crank arm levers about their pivots causes the brake actuating devices on each crank arm lever to act on the bearing surface of the associated brake arm lever to rotate the brake arm lever in a direction to urge its friction braking pad into engagement with the sidewall of the wheel rim to be braked.
Abstract:
A brake assembly is disclosed in which a first pivoted lever receives and transmits brake actuating force to a second pivoted lever via tapered rollers. As the first lever is pivoted, a force is transmitted from a point which moves along the first lever to a point which moves along the length of the second lever so as to provide an increase in the mechanical advantage of both levers. In addition, the point of force application moves along the axis of each tapered roller to increase the rate at which the second lever moves to apply the braking force.

Abstract:
A self-locking hinge for use as a pivotal connector between two pivoted members and adapted to lock the members in a fixed angular relation. The hinge comprises a pair of circular plates that are rigidly affixed to opposite faces of one member and rotatably connected to the other member. The circular plates are used to laterally support both of the members and to guide the other member as it is rotated from a folded position to a fully extended position. The hinge is locked in the fully extended position by means of a locking ring that is slidably engaged with the other member. When such other member is fully extended, the ring engages corresponding locking indentations at the periphery of the circular plates and thereby blocks the movement of the other member in one angular direction. The movement of the other member is blocked in the opposite angular direction due to the abutting of the hinge ends of the members. The members may be returned to the folded position by releasing the locking ring from its engagement with the indentations in the circular plates. The operation of the self-locking hinge of the invention is particularly described with respect to a door security apparatus adopted to engage a door and a floor to resist the opening of the door. A further embodiment uses the self-locking hinge of the invention to provide a means to convert a stepladder to a straight ladder of increased height.
Abstract:
A brake assembly is disclosed in which a first pivoted lever receives and transmits brake actuating force to a second pivoted lever via rollers which transfer force between the two levers at a point which, due to the geometry of the second lever, moves progressively closer to the pivot point of the first lever and farther from the pivot point of the second lever as force is applied to the first lever.

Abstract:
An improved case particularly adapted for the safe and efficient storage and transportation of hats and boots, and in particular western style or cawboy hats and boots, is comprised of a single case preferably having two separate storage compartments, each of which is accessed throguh a separate door. One such compartment is designed to securely hold a hat, particularly a western or cowboy style hat. To achieve this result, a circular insert is provided which receives the top part of the hat thereby holding the hat in a fixed position while a strap, extending horizontally across parallel vertical sides of the box assures that the hat will not be jostled or damaged during transport. The second compartment contains straps along both sides which are intended to be used for securing boots and particularly western or cowboy style boots. Cutouts in an inner plate supporting the two compartments which comprise the case help hold each boot securely in place. On the inside of the door of this second compartment are strips upon which can be attached and detached small storage pouches such as miniature saddle bags.
