摘要:
An article made from at least one network of high strength fibers and a matrix composition that includes a vinyl ester and diallyl phthalate. Preferably, the article is made from at least one prepreg element which includes at least two adjacent layers of the high strength fiber network in the vinyl ester-containing matrix composition. The prepreg element is made by applying a mixture of vinyl ester, diallyl phthalate and a carbon-carbon saturated solvent to the high strength fiber network.

An impact resistant rigid composite article comprising a fibrous layer comprising a network of filaments dispersed in a rigid matrix comprising one or more thermosetting resins and one or more thermoplastic resins.
摘要:
The present invention is a flexible impact resistant article comprising a plurality of prepreg packets. Each prepreg packet comprises at least about 2 prepreg layers. Each prepreg layer comprises a plurality of coplanar fibers embedded in a polymeric matrix. There is a means to maintain at least a portion of each prepreg packet in successive layers. The prepreg packets are unattached to each other over a portion of their adjacent areas, preferably over a substantial portion of their adjacent areas. The plurality of packets results in improved flexibility.

A device for forming a resin impregnated unidirectional fiber reinforced prepreg where the resin impregnated fiber web is supported by a single endless conveyor belt. The device includes a pair of pull rolls which exert force directly and longitudinally onto the conveyor belt and the web.
摘要:
The present invention is a composite comprising a fibrous web and a matrix composition nonuniformly distributed in the major plane of a fibrous web.

A tow of continuous filaments is fed by aspiration into a stream of compressible fluid. The stream containing the filaments is directed into contact with a barrier disposed within a chamber at a force sufficient to initiate crimping of the filaments. A major portion of the compressible fluid is separated from the filaments and expelled from the chamber. The filaments are transported through the chamber by continuous movement of a surface therein at sufficient velocity to cause overfeeding of the filaments, whereby the filaments are forced against a mass of the tow and emerge from the chamber in crimped form.

A method of forming foamed fibers which comprises the steps of forming a melt of a polymer of fiber-forming molecular weight in which is admixed a blowing agent, and a closed-cell-forming additive, extruding said melt through a spinnerette, quenching said melt downstream of said spinnerette under conditions at which bubbles form in said melt, and drawing said melt as it is quenched to produce a foamed fiber having fine bubbles contained therein is disclosed. The product fibers may contain substantially only closed-cells and/or substantially uniform cross sectional area cells.

The invention provides a method and apparatus for cutting a magnetic core spirally wound from a ribbon of glassy metal. The core is mounted on a mandrel, and a portion of the core is appointed to be cut. A clamping mechanism applies to the outside peripheral surface of said portion, a compressive clamping force directed toward said surface and normal thereto. A positioning mechanism locates and fixes the core and mandrel onto an indexing mechanism. The indexing mechanism moves the core and mandrel to a preselected fixed position, and a cutting mechanism cuts the core.

An improved apparatus and process is provided for producing solid metal strip from a molten source using a rapidly moving quench surface. The improvement comprises an auxiliary, liquid-cooled chill roll for contacting the solid strip and urging it against the quench surface. The invention permits high quench rates and improved strip surface smoothness to be achieved and finds particular advantage in the casting of metallic glass alloys.

Continuous filaments are fed into a heating zone. The filaments are then contacted with a stream of heated fluid to increase the temperature of the filaments. The stream of fluid containing the filaments is directed into contact with a barrier disposed within a chamber at a force sufficient to initiate crimping of the filaments. A major portion of the fluid is separated from the filaments and expelled from the chamber. The filaments are transported through the chamber by continuous movement of a surface therein at sufficient velocity to cause overfeeding of the filaments, whereby the filaments are forced against a mass thereof producing crimps therein. One or more streams of heated fluid are then contacted with the mass of filaments to set the crimps. The crimped filaments emerge from the chamber through an outlet opening therein.
