Abstract:
A system for monitoring and modifying the quality and temperature of air within a conditioned space includes a blower unit, a damper unit for selectively admitting outside air into the conditioned space, a temperature moderating unit and a control unit. The control unit includes a thermostat and conventional temperature control apparatus for selectively activating the temperature moderating unit to maintain the desired temperature in the conditioned space. The control unit also incorporates CO2 concentration measuring and control apparatus which includes a small CO2 sensor. The CO2 sensor includes a cathode, an anode and a solid electrolyte disposed intermediate and electrically in contact with each of the cathode and the anode to effect a primary electrical cell. A heater and a heater thermostat serve to maintain the temperature of the cell at about 250° C. The cathode and anode materials and the chemical composition of the electrolyte are further selected such that the voltage generated across the heated cell varies in accordance with the CO2 concentration. CO2 concentration modifying apparatus is responsive to sensing a first predetermined CO2 concentration for turning on the blower unit and to sensing a second, higher, predetermined CO2 concentration for actuating the damper unit to admit outside air.

Abstract:
A conditional autodialer coupled to a telephone line is adapted to selectively automatically dial a predetermined telephone number, after a predetermined delay period following the appearance of an on-hook to off-hook transition on the telephone line. The autodialer includes an off-hook detector, a touch tone detector, a memory for storing the predetermined number, a dialer and a controller (such as a microprocessor) coupled to receive signals from the off-hook detector and touch tone detector, to communicate with the memory and to provide command signals to the dialer. In operation, the controller responds to an off-hook condition by starting the delay period. If the delay period successfully times out, the controller reads the predetermined number from memory and enables the dialer to dial the number onto the telephone line. However, if, during the delay period, the presence of a DTMF digit or an incoming call is sensed, dialing the predetermined number onto the line is prevented. Preferably, both the predetermined number and the length of the predetermined delay period are programmable from the telephone set. The conditional autodialer may be embodied in a stand-alone unit or integrated with an individual telephone set.
Abstract:
The present invention is directed to an oral active agent delivery system and method for delivering discrete units of an active agent formulation to a patient. An active agent formulation chamber containing the active agent formulation and having a fluid passing active agent formulation retainer is placed at a first end into a fluid and at a second end into a patient's mouth. The active agent is delivered when the patient sips on the second end of the chamber.
Abstract:
A thermostat system includes a temperature sensor, an LCD for selectively displaying an alphanumeric message and a processor having a memory for storing program and data information. In one embodiment, the data includes a table storing key terms on a predetermined subject. A communications interface connects the processor and a remote correspondent which is a source of current information. Periodically, communications is established with the remote correspondent to read the current information and parse the current information against the stored key terms. If a match is found, the current information is further searched for a value associated with the matched key term in order to display an alphanumeric message which shows a first message component representative of the connotation of the matched key term and a second message component representative of the associated value. In a variant embodiment, the remote correspondent provides a service periodically sending predetermined information for display on the LCD. In another variant embodiment, the thermostat system can use current information received from the first remote correspondent to send directive information to suitably change the temperature (or other parameter) set point at a second remote site.
Abstract:
A thermostat system for controlling space conditioning equipment includes a temperature sensor for providing an electrical signal indicative of the temperature of a conditioned space and a processor having a central processing unit, a memory for storing program and data information and an input/output unit. The input/output unit has a temperature sensor input, a control output sending control signals to the space conditioning equipment and also an electrical device interface adapted to establish communications between the processor and a plurality of addressable electrical devices. In operation, when the system is in a vacation mode the processor issues a pattern of commands to the devices to provide the illusion of ongoing occupancy. In one preferred embodiment, communications between the processor and the devices takes place over the local line power system. In another preferred embodiment, the processor sends commands via infrared to an electrical device controller which resends the commands over the local line power system to the devices.

Abstract:
A call defeat device to prevent calling unauthorized numbers, such as long distance, 1-900 etc., which is adapted to prevent a caller from successfully dialing one or more predetermined digit strings on a touch tone telephone connected to a given telephone line by apparatus including a touch tone decoder coupled to the telephone line and a microprocessor/memory for storing and issuing predetermined unauthorized digit strings, if dialed on the telephone, designates that the call is to be defeated. A comparator compares each digit string dialed on the telephone to the predetermined digit strings, and, if a match is sensed, a dialer sends onto the telephone line at least one DTMF digit, such as a "#", which will defeat the call in progress. In a variant of the unauthorized call defeat apparatus, if an unauthorized digit string is dialed, a mode of operation can be selected in which an audio tone, falling outside the standard passbands of all tones representing dialed digits, is applied to the telephone line so as to "jam" and thus prevent any meaningful communication on the line. The invention can be implemented as a stand alone device or incorporated into a telephone.
Abstract:
In order to determine the prospective long term improvement to a diseased eye obtained by performing a treatment such as retinal laser surgery, the diameters of the four major arteriole blood vessels are measured, preferably digitally, and summed before the treatment at positions substantially equidistant from the center of the region where they converge and enter the optic nerve head. After the eye heals, the diameters of the blood vessels are digitally remeasured, and the degree of reduction of the second value with respect to the first value is determined. The reduction is compared to a predetermined reduction range (as obtained, for example, from a computer database of known results) which is representative of known degrees of long term improvement to obtain an indication of the expected long term results of the subject eye and the adequacy of the treatment. The same procedure may be employed to predict the results of medical or surgical retinal interventions other than retinal laser surgery, and a similar procedure may be employed to help establish the suitability of medical or surgical retinal interventions, including laser surgery, on a given eye by comparing the retinal blood vessel measurements taken before any such intervention to corresponding measurements of a reference eye (e.g., a normal eye) and applying a maximum acceptable difference between the two.
Abstract:
An automatic telephone recorder includes a computer equipped with a sound signal handling feature and a digital recording medium such as a disk drive. The sound signal handling feature includes an audio input, an audio output and programmable means for selectively effecting digital recording on the recording medium of an audio signal applied to the sound signal handling means input. A line transformer is connected between a telephone line pair and the sound signal handling means audio input. The sound signal handling means is programmed to periodically test the sound signal handling means audio input to determine if audio or a predetermined transient signal, indicating that the telephone line has gone from an on-hook condition to an off-hook condition, is present. If the audio or transient signal is present, the sound signal handling means is programmed to institute recording of any audio signal present at the sound signal handling means audio input for as long as such audio remains. In one embodiment, a pulse stretcher circuit responds to sensing the presence of the pulse by generating a time-extended signal which the sound signal handling means can sample, thus relieving the computer from the necessity to continuously sample the transient signal source at a relatively high rate which ties up the central processor resources.
Abstract:
A programmable thermostat system for controlling space conditioning equipment includes: a transparent touch pad juxtaposed over a liquid crystal display to constitute a touch screen for interactive interface with a user; a temperature sensor; and a processor including: a CPU; a real time clock; and a memory for storing program and data information. A program stored in the memory directs the CPU to: A) selectively establish, on the liquid crystal display, a menu including a representation of a button at a predetermined XY position; B) read the position on the touch pad juxtaposed with the first predetermined position to determine if the button has been touched; and C) if the button has been touched, change to a different menu or establish a condition incorporated into the thermostat system operation. Preferably, an alphanumeric message explaining the function of the button is also displayed. Different menus can place the buttons and messages in various positions on the touch screen to facilitate intuitive programming of the thermostat system.
