A steering system has annular pressure responsive electric components, such as piezo-electric transducers, mounted between thrust and restraining faces respectively, the transducers respond to a mechanical load applied to them by generating or determining electrical signals which are proportional to the load, the signals are supplied to a comparator by way of electrical connections. The transducers are arranged in pairs on the axially opposed faces of a bearing, so that in response to an axial thrust applied to the bearing by an input shaft of a steering gear incorporated in the system, the signals provided by the transducers will change from a predetermined comparative condition, one signal increasing in response to the increased compressive load on one transducer, the other signal decreasing in response to a decrease in compressive load on the other transducer in the pair. The predetermined comparative condition is established by compressing the transducer pair during installation by means of a retaining cap, which is screw threadedly connected to a housing. The changes in the electrical signal enable the comparator to determine the magnitude and direction of the thrust and to use this information for monitoring or control purposes.

A variable ratio rack and pinion gear having a rack bar (1) the rack (8) of which engages with the pinion (10) so that rotation of the pinion displaces the rack member (1) longitudinally relative to the housing (6). A yoke (25) supports the member (1) with its teeth in engagement with the pinion and straddles the member (1) to restrain displacement of that member relative to the housing (6) in a direction parallel to the axis of rotation for the pinion (10). The rack member is restrained from rotation relative to the housing, and (1) has a longitudinally extending non-rectilinear grooved track of one or more curved portions (14) which is engaged by a peg (17) rotatably carried in a mounting block (21). The block (21) retains the yoke (25) in the housing with the peg (17) located within and extending through the yoke (25). The peg (17) engages with the track (14) so that during longitudinal displacement of the rack member (1) the reaction between the groove (14) and peg (17) imparts limited controlled rotation to the member (1) to vary the ratio of the gear. Consequently, by appropriately shaping the track the gear assembly can be provided with a predetermined variable gear ratio. For example, the track may be a helix of variable pitch to provide the variable gear ratio. The peg can rotate in its mounting block (21) to alleviate friction between the peg and rack member (1) during displacement of the latter and can be spring biased to urge and support the rack member for engagement with the pinion.In a modification, the grooved track (14) is engaged by the peripheral edge of a rotatably mounted roller or wheel located within the yoke so that engagement between the roller and rack member (1) imparts rotation to the rack member to vary the gear ratio during displacement of the rack member.The teeth of the rack member can extend part way only around the periphery of that member while the non-toothed peripheral portion provides a slideway within which the groove (14) is machined and with which the yoke (25) slidably engages.

A rotatable input shaft (1) drives a rotatable output shaft (18) through a roller (7) which roller is displaceable along its rotational axis (8) while maintaining driving engagement with drive faces (6 and 14) of the shafts (1 and 18) respectively to vary the drive ratio through the assembly. If the rotational speed of shaft (18) varies substantially from a predetermined value (for example by variations in rotational speed of the input shaft (1)) the governor (34) reacts to displace the spool (26) in a manner which directs fluid pressure to piston chambers (12 and 13) and displaces the roller (7) in a sense to increase or decrease the mechanical advantage at which drive is transmitted between the input and output shafts to adjust the rotational speed of the output shaft (18) and maintain it substantially constant.

The valve including a spool assembly (100) having first (5) and second (10) spool parts and which is axially displaceable in a spool housing (101) to control flow of fluid under pressure from a pressurized port (1) to an actuating port (8) intended for communication with a ram. The first and second spool parts (5, 10) form a reaction chamber (105) the volume of which is variable. The spool parts (5, 10) can be connected by a pin and slot mechanism (108, 14) so that the chamber (105) has maximum and minimum volumes. Control means (4) acts on one (5) of the spool parts for manually displacing the spool assembly in one axial direction to open communication between said pressurized port (1) and the actuating port (8). A biasing spring (12) opposes axial displacement of the other (10) of the spool parts in the one axial direction. The reaction chamber (105) communicates with the actuating port (8) when that port (8) communicates with the pressurized port (1) and upon pressurization of the reaction chamber (105) by its communication with the pressurized port the other spool part (10) reacts against the biasing spring (12) to oppose and provide a reaction to the manual force which is applied to displace the spool assembly (100) in one axial direction.A secondary spring (9) which is weaker than the biasing spring (12) biases the reaction chamber (105) to its expanded condition. The valve can be double acting to be displaceable from a neutral condition and in either sense of axial direction to control fluid flow to one or the opposite sides of a ram; in the neutral condition both sides of the ram may communicate through the valve with exhaust.

In a power assisted rack and pinion vehicle steering mechanism, a rack and a pinion engage within a housing. The pinion is mounted on a pinion shaft which is journalled in bearings in a cage. A lever is fixed to the cage and projects from the cage through the housing. The lever has a part-spherical seating portion which engages a part-spherical seat in the housing. Spring means biases the rack into engagement wiht the pinion, and through the cage biases the part-spherical seating portion of the lever into engagement with the seat on the housing. Steering torque imparted on the pinion moves the rack axially and causes a reaction on the pinion which rotates the cage about the center of the part-spherical seating portion. This rocks the lever to actuate power assistance means.

Steering input torque is sensed by a torque sensor 36 and steering direction is sensed by a direction switch 34. Output signals from these devices are fed to micro-processor 20 which controls solenoid valve 18 and pump motor 22 accordingly, varying the motor speed in accordance with the pressure requirements of the steering ram as sensed by the torque sensor. In a further embodiment the pump is driven at a constant speed and a proportional control valve 74 is controlled by a micro-processor 78 to vary the fluid pressure supply.

A power assisted steering system and a steering assembly for such a system. The steering assembly has a steering output comprising an arm 6 displaceable through a toothed sector 7 by a racked piston nut 3 drivingly engaging a worm shaft 7 rotatable by a steering input shaft 12. The piston 3 and its cylinder 2 provides a first servomotor for power assisting the steering output. The first servomotor is powered by a first hydraulic system 16 comprising a rotary valve 10 which is responsive to the steering input to control fluid pressure to the first servomotor. The steering system also includes a second hydraulic system 25 comprising an axially responsive spool valve 21 which controls fluid pressure to operate a second servomotor 28 coupled to the steering output arm 6. The rotary and axially responsive valves 10 and 21 are axially coupled together by the shaft 7 which is axially displaceable to control operation of the valve 21. Axial biasing springs 34 and 35 axially spring load the shaft 7 to a neutral condition for the valve 21. During use of the steering assembly the resistance to displacement of the piston 3 by the drive imparted thereto from the worm shaft 7 serves to provide a reaction on the shaft 7 which displaces the shaft against its spring biasing to operate the valve 21 and provide power assistance through the system 25 and ram 28. This power assistance may be effected prior to, simultaneously with or subsequent to power assistance provided by the servomotor comprising the piston 3 powered by operation of the rotary valve and from the hydraulic system 16. If required, both hydraulic systems 16 and 25 can be used to power a single and common servomotor.

An hydraulic system: a power assisted vehicle steering system which includes such an hydraulic system and a method of alleviating noise in an hydraulic system. The hydraulic system as applied to a vehicle steering gear (1) has an open center valve (3) which directs hydraulic fluid under pressure derived from a pump (12) and in response to a steering maneuver through a shaft (4) to a servo motor of the gear (1). Downstream of the open center valve (3) is a restrictor (8) through which hydraulic fluid from the valve (3) passes to a reservoir (11). The restriction effected by the restrictor (8) to fluid flow from the valve (3) to the reservoir is variable to provide a throttling action and a back pressure in the line (6) to alleviate noise in the valve (3).
