Abstract:
Conditions in a fluidized bed are measured with a probe and a circuit. The bed can be a polymerization reactor's reaction chamber, and the conditions can result in "sheeting" which is the build up of polymer on the chamber walls. The probe protrudes into the bed and detects a current which generally is a function of at least the impact and charge of particulates in the bed. The current detected by the probe is related to the conditions in the bed. The circuit measures the detected current. The probe has an inner probe piece of metallic material within an insulator of polymeric material. A portion of the insulator protrudes a first distance into the bed, and a portion of the inner probe piece protrudes a second distance into the bed. The first distance is less than or equal to the second distance. The insulator typically does not extend as far into the bed as the inner probe piece.
Abstract:
An improved invasive acoustic sensor apparatus detects particulate matter in a flow by impingement thereon. The apparatus includes an axially extending probe body having an active length positionable in a flow and a distributed piezoelectric transducer disposed therein. The transducer is acoustically coupled to an interior surface of the body, along substantially the entire active length thereof, and may be a piezoelectric film, piezoelectric tube, or a plurality of electrically parallel connected piezoelectric tube elements. The apparatus further includes an acoustic isolation layer disposed between the probe body and positioning structure to reduce transmission of process wall vibration to the transducer.
Abstract:
Conductive materials are formed by implanting high energy ions (30 keV to 300 keV) into rigid backboned polymers, such as poly (p-phenylene sulfide); conductivities on the order of 10.sup.-3 (ohm-cm).sup.-1 are demonstrated and the materials remain stable over periods as long as a year.
Abstract:
A Raman spectrometer including a laser excitation source, edge filters, and detection optics that direct light into a spectrograph. A spectrograph containing a dispersive element and optics that directs various wavelengths of light onto a segmented diffractive MEMS light modulator array. The MEMS array, depending on actuation state, directs light either to or away from a single detector. Control electronics drive the MEMS light modulator for either sequential wavelength measurement or multiplexed wavelength measurement (Hadamard for example).
Abstract:
An on-line nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) system, and related methods, are useful for predicting one or more properties of interest of a polymer. In one embodiment, a neural network is used to develop a model which correlates process variables in addition to manipulated NMR output to predict a polymer property of interest. In another embodiment, a partial least square regression technique is used to develop a model of enhanced accuracy. Either the neural network technique or the partial least square regression technique may be used in conjunction with a described multi-model or best-model-selection scheme according to the invention. The polymer can be a plastic such as polyethylene, polypropylene, or polystyrene, or a rubber such as ethylene propylene rubber.
Abstract:
A fishing lure apparatus includes a housing which includes an interior channel located along a longitudinal axis. A rear portion of the housing has an outer width and includes a predetermined number of slots. A shaft assembly, extending through and supported by the interior channel, is adapted for being located in the interior channel in either a locked position or an unlocked position. A hook assembly includes a predetermined number of hooks, and the predetermined number of hooks is equal to the predetermined number of slots. The hook assembly has an outer width which is less than the width of the rear portion of the housing, whereby the hook assembly is protected by the rear portion of the housing when the hook assembly is in a protected mode in which tip portions the hooks are nestled in or retained within the slots. A spring assembly, supported by the housing, is in contact with a spring-contacting portion of the shaft assembly. When the spring-contacting portion is moved along the longitudinal axis toward the front portion of the housing, the shaft assembly can be placed in the locked position. The spring assembly st potential energy. A trigger assembly, connected to the housing, includes a fish-strike-receiving portion and an unlocking portion which releases the shaft assembly from the locked position permitting the shaft assembly to move to the unlocked position, whereby the tip portions of the hooks are exposed to the interior mouth tissues of a fish.
Abstract:
An apparatus which is particularly useful in measuring dielectric changes in materials, even when subjected to abrasive and/or high-pressure environments. The apparatus includes a housing adapted to mounting within a vessel containing the material to-be-tested, the housing presenting at least one exposed surface to the interior of the vessel to contact the material and a set of first and second electrodes which are disposed on the exposed surface of the housing to make contact with the material, such that the dielectric properties of the material within the vessel can be monitored. The apparatus is particularly useful in the monitoring of curing of resins in both high and low pressure molding operations, including sheet molding compound (SMC) processes, reactive injection molding (RIM) techniques and similar operations.
Abstract:
An apparatus 10 for stripping fluid from the surface of a vehicle including a plenum 14 and a flexible inflatable primary bag 20 having a primary bag inlet releasably mounted on the plenum 14 for allowing the flow of air from the plenum 14 to the primary bag 20 and a nozzle end 22 and a bag opening 24 disposed between the primary bag inlet and the nozzle end 22. The apparatus further includes a flexible inflatable secondary bag 26 having an elongated secondary bag inlet 28 secured about the bag opening 24 for hinging movement and a nozzle end 30 for allowing the flow of air therethrough. The apparatus is characterized by including a hinging control frame 34 for controlling the hinging action of the secondary bag 26 with respect to the primary bag 20.
Abstract:
A waveguide-based sensor is disclosed that uses one or more grating patterns of a bioreceptor on a surface of the waveguide to provide a wavelength-specific sensor response without the requirement of labeling the target molecule or the bioreceptor. Furthermore, there is provided a biosensor that, at least to a first order, is insensitive to non-specific binding.
Abstract:
An adjustable clamp (26) for selectively varying the hinging action of a flexible, inflatable fluid-stripping bag (12) including an elongated bag inlet (14) having a predetermined cross-sectional area and a nozzle (16) at one end thereof and wherein the bag inlet (14) is mounted about an opening (24) of a plenum (20) for supplying air to the bag (12). The clamp comprises an adjustable frame (26) adapted to be disposed about the bag inlet (14) and spaced therefrom to adjustably limit the extent to which the bag inlet (14) opens to determine the cross-sectional area and a band member and fastening device for securing the frame (26) about the bag inlet (14) whereby a change in the cross-sectional area produced by the frame (26) changes the resistance of the hinging action of the bag (12).A method is also provided for selectively varying the hinging action of the flexible, inflatable fluid-stripping bag (12) including the steps of mounting the bag inlet (14) about an opening (24) of a plenum (20) for supplying air to the bag (12) and characterized by selectively varying the cross-sectional area of the bag inlet (14) to vary the hinging action of the bag (12) whereby changing the cross-sectional area of the bag inlet (14) changes the resistance to hinging action of the bag (12).
