Abstract:
A method for removing brittle lacquer stress coatings from the surfaces of plastic models composed of polyvinyl chloride resin without injury to the substrate and without causing any modification in the mechanical properties thereof, rendering the model reuseable for further stress analysis testing. The invention also encompasses a novel liquid stripping composition.
Abstract:
Disclosed is an apparatus for bending a workpiece while retaining the same in a single plane. An exemplary use for such an apparatus is to bend a flat sheet of steel prior to blanking and forming operations and preparatory to its being assembled into a vehicle frame. Such an operation, referred to in the art as edge bending is known to conserve materials but is difficult to achieve with prior art devices and therefore has not been widely adopted. The present apparatus overcomes many of the problems with the prior art devices. It includes a base and a bed member parallel to and movable toward and away from the base. One or more push blocks are supported by the bed and guided for movement transversely thereof. A linkage is provided to move the push blocks across the bed as the bed is moved toward and away from the base. The apparatus is designed for operation with a conventional hydraulic or mechanicam press and the bed is moved toward the base by the press. The apparatus allows conversion of a conventional stamping press to an edge bending press. The ram of the press need only be fitted with a flat plate which, in conjunction with the bed of the present apparatus serves to restrain the workpiece in the desired plane.
Abstract:
The invention is a trans-axle with integral braking for use in two wheel drive vehicles. The apparatus accepts rotary power through rotary input means and transfers it through transmission to a differential to two separate outputs, allowing the driving wheels to rotate at different speeds while the vehicle is cornering. A one-way clutch is employed to allow the two outputs to freewheel or coast in the forward direction, at the same or different speeds, without rotation of the rotary input means. Reversal of the rotary input means actuates a brake which slows or stops the differential case. This in turn slows or stops both outputs while still maintaining the differential action for vehicle cornering during deceleration. In addition, the apparatus includes an anti-back travel feature which automatically engages the brake when the vehicle travels backward and a parking brake feature by which the brake remains set at the braking level employed. The brake may always be released by the application of forward rotary input power or by actuation of a brake release pawl which allows the normally nonrotational brake mechanism to rotate with the differential input. This also allows the vehicle to be driven in reverse by application of input power with a ''''direction'''' opposite to the normal input.
Abstract:
A normally engaged torque transmitting device is disclosed. In a typical application, the device is used as a brake to resist rotation of a shaft. The device consists of two members normally frictionally clamped together by one or more sets of interleaved friction discs and separator plates such as those commonly associated with shaft connecting clutches. The first member is a cylindrical housing with means for attachment to a shaft, stationary frame member, or the like. The housing includes a bore in which is received at least one friction disc splined thereto to permit axial but not rotational movement with respect thereto. The second member is a collar for fixed connection to a shaft or the like and includes outwardly extending separator plates interleaved with the friction discs on the housing. The friction discs splined to the housing and separator plates splined to the collar are urged into engagement by a pressure plate and spring means. A tubular member is carried within and engages the pressure plate. Two spaced annular plates are carried between the housing and tubular member. Introduction of fluid in the space between the annular plates separate the plates and, via the tubular member, moves the pressure plate away from the friction discs and separator plates.
Abstract:
A friction clutch of the spring loaded type is disclosed. The clutch comprises an improved lever assembly having fixed knifeedge pivot pins about which a plurality of clutch release levers operate to reduce friction during operation of the clutch between engaged and disengaged positions. The pivot pins and release levers include cooperating portions adapted to form restraining means which prevent the release levers from moving radially outwardly during operation of the clutch as a result of centrifugal forces.
Abstract:
A fluid control system for actuating a master clutch has a variable pressure regulator valve which operates in response to engine speed and engine load. The variable fluid pressure is delivered to a clutch actuating piston to regulate the magnitude of actuating pressure for operating the clutch. Fluid directed away from the clutch actuating piston is used to provide cooling for the clutch. A clutch dump valve is incorporated in the control system to completely disengage the clutch making gear ratio shifts. To alleviate clutch drag, the controls are such as to also dump the clutch lube oil when the clutch is in neutral and when the clutch is disengaged during transient transmission ratio shifts.
Abstract:
An improved frequency synthesizer capable of generating a pulse train having a frequency which is the Nth discrete increment of a reference frequency. The synthesized frequency equals the product of the reference frequency times a preselected constant N and divided by a fixed constant K which determines the value of each increment. Circuitry is provided for incrementing N up or down to the preselected value without skipping any increments to obtain a desired output frequency.

A method and apparatus for compression molding articles of elastomeric material is disclosed. Each article is molded in a separate, portable mold which is sequentially conveyed to stations which perform the process steps of: (1) preparing, (2) loading the open mold, (3) partially closing the mold, (4) completely closing and locking the mold under pressure, (5) heating the mold to cure the elastomeric material, (6) unlocking the mold, and (7) opening the mold, stripping out the article and locking the mold open for step number (1).
Abstract:
A low vehicle profile is obtained in a front wheel drive system by providing a V-drive axle center section at the rear of a transmission with a pair of forwardly extending V-shaped output or drive shafts. The output shafts are adapted to drive a pair of angled forwardly extending propeller shafts disposed on opposite sides of the center section so that drive can be transmitted to separate gear units located at each front wheel for individually driving the same. Equalization of power between the front wheels is accomplished by means of a conventional bevel gear differential located in one of the output shafts with drive to the differential being through a pinion gear keyed to an adapter sleeve serving as the axle center section input shaft. The front wheel drive system is easily converted into a four-wheel drive system by merely removing the adapter sleeve and inserting in its place a second differential of the worm gear type. By this arrangement input drive is then transmitted to the second differential with the drive divided by the worm gearing in such a manner as to have a portion directed to the first differential located on the center section output shaft and portion directed to a rearwardly extending propeller shaft for driving the rear wheels of the vehicle while still maintaining the desired low vehicle profile.
Abstract:
The invention is disclosed herein in apparatus for minimizing the emission of unburned and partially burned fuel from a vehicle internal combustion engine having a carburetor and intake manifold including means for providing a vacuum source for engine control function, an ignition system including an ignition coil, an electrical energy source connected to the ignition coil, and an exhaust gas manifold. An exhaust gas recirculation valve is utilized for feeding exhaust gases back from an exhaust system to an intake manifold. A solenoid valve is utilized for selectively connecting a vacuum source to operate the exhaust gas recirculation valve. An electronic engine speed sensing means is utilized to control the solenoid valve. Although the electronic engine speed sensing circuit disclosed herein has particular applicability as a control means with the vehicle system described, it should be noted that the novel electronic engine speed sensing circuit has utility elsewhere.
