    摘要: A method for manufacturing a magnetic recording medium including at least a non-magnetic substrate, a soft magnetic underlayer, an orientation control layer that controls an orientation of an immediate upper layer, and a perpendicular magnetic layer in which a magnetization easy axis is mainly perpendicularly oriented with respect to the non-magnetic substrate so as to be laminated one another on the non-magnetic substrate. The perpendicular magnetic layer includes two or more magnetic layers, and each layer is subjected to a crystal growth such that each crystal grain composing each magnetic layer forms a columnar crystal continuous in a thickness direction together with the crystal grains composing the orientation control layer. The orientation control layer, formed of a Co—Cr alloy, is formed by the reactive sputtering using a mixture of a sputtering gas and nitrogen.

    摘要: A magnetic recording medium which has been made by forming at least one magnetic layer having a granular structure on a substrate by sputtering, wherein said at least one magnetic recording layer having a granular structure comprises magnetic grains separated from each other by an oxide, and is made by sputtering a target comprising cobalt oxide and substantially free from metallic chromium and a chromium alloy. The magnetic grains in the granular structure have an average grain diameter of not larger than 6 nm, and are separated from each other by the oxide with a grain boundary width of at least 1.5 nm. The magnetic grains are minute and separated from each other with an enhanced grain boundary width, and the magnetic recording medium exhibits an enhanced recording density and improved electromagnetic conversion characteristics.

    摘要: Provided is a magnetic recording medium which maintains high vertical orientation of a vertical magnetic layer, and which is capable of realizing high recording densification. In the magnetic recording medium, at least a soft magnetic underlying layer (30), seed layers (31, 32), an orientation control layer (33), and a vertical magnetic layer are laminated in this order on the non-magnetic substrate. The soft magnetic underlying layer (30) has an amorphous or microcrystalline structure. The seed layers (31, 32) include a first seed layer (31) formed from a metal oxide or a metal nitride, and a second seed layer (32) which is formed on the first seed layer and is formed from a metal formed with an island-shape or a net shape. In the orientation control layer (33) and the vertical magnetic layer, respective crystal grains constitute columnar crystals that are continuous in a thickness direction based on the second seed layer (32).
