A method of manufacturing a cold-rolled can steel sheet having less planar anisotropy and achieving good workability. Rough-rolling is first performed on a continuously-cast slab. The slab has a composition essentially consisting of: C: 0.004 wt % or lower; Mn: 0.05-0.5 wt %; P: 0.02 wt % or lower; Al: 0.005-0.07 wt %; N: 0.004 wt % or lower; and Nb: 0.001-0.018 wt %, the rest being Fe and unavoidable impurities. A resultant sheet bar is then subjected to hot rolling which is completed at a finishing rolling temperature at an Ar.sub.3 transformation point or higher. The resultant sheet bar is coiled at a temperature range from 450.degree.-700.degree. C. Subsequently, the resultant sheet bar undergoes primary cold rolling before continuous annealing, which is performed at a recrystallization temperature or higher, and secondary cold rolling. The primary and secondary cold rolling are respectively performed at reduction ratios satisfying the following conditions of: 88%.gtoreq.CR.sub.1 %+0.36.times.CR.sub.2 .ltoreq.105% wherein CR.sub.1 : reduction ratio of the primary cold rolling CR.sub.2 : reduction ratio of the secondary cold rolling

A hot rolled steel sheet having a specific composition and having a specific small grain size of ferrite constituting the steel sheet has high resistances against secondary-work embrittlement and brazing embrittlement and is adapted for ultra-deep drawing. The specific small grain size of the ferrite can be obtained by limiting the hot rolling condition of a slab having the specific composition.

The present invention presents a high tensile strength cold rolled steel sheet having excellent formability, impact resistance and strain age hardening characteristics, and the production thereof. As a specific means, a slab having a composition which contains, by mass %, 0.15% or less of C, 0.02% or less of Al, and 0.0050 to 0.0250% of N at N/Al of 0.3 or higher, and has N in a solid solution state at 0.0010% or more, is first hot rolled at the finish rolling delivery-side temperature of 800° C. or above, and is subsequently coiled at the coiling temperature of 750° C. or below to prepare a hot rolled plate. Then, after cold rolling, the hot rolled plate is continuously cooled at a temperature from the recrystallization temperature to 900° C. at a holding time of 10 to 120 seconds, and is cooled by primary cooling in which the hot rolled plate is cooled to 500° C. or below at a cooling rate of 10 to 300° C./s, and furthermore if necessary, by secondary cooling in which a residence time is 300 seconds or less in a temperature range of the primary cooling stopping temperature or below and 350° C. or higher. Provided is a steel sheet containing a ferritic phase having an average crystal grain size of 10 &mgr;m or less at an area ratio of 50% or more, and if necessary, a martensitic phase at an area ratio of 3% or more as a second phase.

This invention can form a sufficiently internal oxide layer in a surface layer portion of an iron matrix of a steel sheet by hot rolling a base steel and subjecting to a heat treatment at a temperature range of 650-950° C. in an atmosphere substantially not causing reduction while being adhered with a black skin scale irrespectively of a chemical steel composition or production history, or even when a radiation type heating of a radial tube or the like is used in a recrystallization annealing before a hot dipping treatment, and hence excellent hot-dipping property and conversion treating property can be given to a steel sheet for hot dipping.

A hot rolled steel sheet comprises ultrafine ferrite grains as a main phase and fine second phase particles. The ferrite grains have an average grain size of not less than 2 &mgr;m but less than 4 &mgr;m. The second phase has an average particle size of not more than 8 &mgr;m and in not less than 80% of the second phase, the spacing of the second phase particle with the closest second phase particle is not less than the second phase particle size. The steel sheet has an ultrafine grain structure, superior mechanical characteristics, reduced anisotropy in its mechanical characteristics and high formability. A process for producing the steel sheet is also disclosed.
