The invention relates to a novel process for the preparation of the optically pure 2S- or 2R-indolinecarboxylic acid of the formula ##STR1## and salts thereof. The process comprises forming the heterocyclic 5-membered ring in formula I from an open chain precursor by diastereoselective cyclization.

A process has been developed for controlling the catalytic co-oligmoerization of 1,3-dienes with Schiff's bases which comprises condensing a 1,3-diene of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.4 and R.sup.5, independently of one another, represent hydrogen or an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms with a Schiff base of the formula ##STR2## wherein each of R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 represents hydrogen alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, aryl or dimethylamino groups which, in addition, optionally contain functional groups of the group consisting of ethers esters, C.dbd.N double bonds and which can be closed to form a ring, in the presence of a nickel (O)-containing catalyst, and optionally in the presence of an X--H compound with a molar ratio of Ni: X H of from 1:0 to 1:10.

Cyclopropanecarboxylic acid alkynyl esters of the formula I ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is unsubstituted or substituted phenyl or thienyl, R.sub.2 is hydrogen, alkyl having 1-6 C atoms, alkenyl having 2-6 C atoms, or phenyl or naphthyl which is unsubstituted or substituted by an alkyl or alkoxy group having 1-2 C atoms or by a halogen atom, and R.sub.3 is hydrogen, alkyl having 1-6 C atoms or alkenyl having 2-6 C atoms, are suitable for combating various plant and animal pests, particularly insects, and members of the order Acarina. They can be obtained by reaction of corresponding alkynols with cyclopropanecarboxylic acid or with a reactive functional derivative thereof.

The invention relates to a process for the preparation of pyridine-2,3-dicarboxylic acid derivatives of formula ##STR1## which process comprises reacting a hydrazone of formula II ##STR2## with a maleic acid derivative of formula III ##STR3## to give a 1-amino-1,4-dihydropyridine-2,3-dicarboxylic acid derivative of formula IV ##STR4## and subsequently removing R.sub.9 R.sub.10 NH. In the above formulae, R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.9, R.sub.10 and X are as defined in claim 1. The pyridine-2,3-dicarboxylic acid derivatives of formula I are intermediates for the preparation of herbicidal compounds.

The invention relates to novel substituted N-ethynylphenyl-N'-benzoylureas of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is fluorine, chlorine, bromine, methoxy or methyl, R.sub.2 is hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, bromine, methoxy or methyl, and n is 0 or 1, while the ethynyl radical --C.tbd.CH is in the 3- or 4-position, to methods of obtaining these compounds and to compositions containing them for use in pest control, especially for controlling insects that attack plants and animals. The novel compounds have a pronounced ovolarvicidal, especially ovicidal, activity against plant-destructive insects.
