    摘要: Single station apparatus and processing procedures for packaging production-tonnage coils of flat-rolled sheet metal so as to provide protection from (i) packaged atmosphere, (ii) ambient atmosphere, and (iii) changing ambient atmospheric conditions. Such coil is positioned centrally of such single station apparatus for integrated polymeric stretch-film encapsulation of such wound coil and for securing such coil to a pallet. A centrally-located support of such structure enables pivotal circumscribing movement of a power-driven source of polymeric stretch-film with provisions for control of stretch-film tension. A pallet-mounted sheet metal coil, with its central axis vertically-oriented and with bottom and top planar surfaces protected, is circumferentially wound free of any requirement for movement of pallet or coil so as to encapsulate such coil, in effect, providing hermetic sealing of the coil. And the encapsulated coil is affixed to such pallet by continuous-length polymeric stretch-film wrapping. Coil encapsulating and securing of the coil to the pallet are carried out by integrated processing and by integrated apparatus. A rectangular configuration pallet platform surface requires no central opening for metal strand banding to secure the coil to the pallet, resulting in safer and more efficient palletizing of a coil and release from the pallet.

    摘要: In-line flat-rolled steel cleansing and finishing methods and apparatus are disclosed which enable flat-rolled steel, as supplied with surface areas contaminated with iron fines and other debris from gauge reduction operations, to be continuously processed in-line, free of interruptions for cleansing purposes. Continuous-strip methods and apparatus are disclosed which enable in-line continuous-strip cleansing in a manner which decreases iron fines carried by strip surfaces to a desired level while providing for continuous uniform cleansing. Carry-over of iron fines from the cleansing operations so decreases such that iron content of a coating means is decreased resulting in improved corrosion-protection coating. Diminishing iron content in a hot-dip galvanizing bath increases efficiency of aluminum additions and diminishes iron-aluminum dross.

    摘要: Draw processing flat-rolled sheet metal substrate preselectively precoated on each surface with organic coating and draw lubricant into one-piece can bodies ready for assembly into sanitary can packs free of any requirement for applying organic coating or adding organic coating for repair purposes after fabrication and before such direct usage. Cupping of precoated flat-rolled sheet metal can stock using preselected tooling configurations and clearance avoids any increase in side wall metal thickness gage. Tension elongation during redraw is controlled over side wall height by clamping solely between planar clamping surfaces, tooling configurations and preselected clearances to decrease thickness gage uniformly over side wall height between flange metal open end of can body and curved transition zone at closed end. High production rate blanking and cupping is achieved with out-of-phase simultaneous movement of cupping die and punch which provides for rapid discharge cup-shaped work product, open-end-down on flange at open end of cup. Surface area of the cavity entrance zone for each die is fabricated about multiple radii forming sharp edge about which coated can stock is drawn into each die cavity. Curved surface transition zone for each punch is maintained large in relation to sheet metal substrate starting gage which facilitates change of configuration of metal from planar state into cylindrical side wall.

Selective organic precoating includes embodying a blooming compound which is made available as draw lubricant responsive to heat and/or pressure of draw forming; also, surface application of a draw lubricant after curing of the organic coating. Combined lubricant on each surface is verified before start of fabricating. Draw-forming of tensile strength sheet metal is controlled over side wall height by clamping solely between planar clamping surfaces and by interruption of draw to establish a flange at the open end of cup-shaped work product. Surface area of the cavity entrance zone for each die is preselected along with curved surface transition zone on draw punch in relation to sheet metal substrate starting gage. Nesting of curvilinear clamping surfaces of the prior art is eliminated during redraw of work product. The curved transition zone of cup-shaped work product is reshaped prior to redraw.

    摘要: A coating control system is provided enabling continuous operations, free of interruption for coating control purposes, while achieving desired coating weight and thickness profile for the various gages, widths and coating specifications encountered on a given continuous strip production line. In each of a pair of elongated pneumatic dies, a pressurized gas jet is controllably shaped and directed by flow-control means internally-mounted of each pneumatic die to impinge against its respective substrate coated surface with its major directional component of force being controlled to be perpendicularly transverse to the travel path of the coated strip across its full width. Adjustment of such internally-mounted means is coordinated with control of gas pressure supply and/or adjustment of die positioning means to maintain desired coating weight and coating profile across the width of the strip. Pneumatic and other crown-control measures of the invention are exercised along the centerline of the strip enabling production of continuous-strip galvanized steel product having improved tracking and handling properties.

Multi-folds of sheet metal provide rounded edge metal (73, 78) shilding for residual scoreline metal; pre-folding of the metal is carried out while leaving access for scoring tooling (86, 88) to enable scoring on a single thickness of sheet metal; and so as to avoid premature damage to the residual scoreline metal upon final orientation. Rivet button (83) and riveting of the tab opener to the removable disc (30) are carried out in the metal folding sequence.

    摘要: Continuous in-line control of work product is provided in draw-redraw processing of flat-rolled sheet metal, coil coated on both its surfaces with organic coating, to finished one-piece can bodies. Drawing of a sheet metal blank is controlled to present flange metal at the open end of the cup-shaped work product which is disposed with its closed end wall in the sheet metal line. The drawn work product is pneumatically controlled to separate the sheet metal line from the can line eliminating random accumulation of work product. Redrawing operations are carried out closed end up to present flange metal which stabilizes in-line movement of work product. Electrostatic lubrication to protect organic coating and facilitate forming is carried out prior to each redrawing operation; in-line movement of work product is controlled during such lubrication. Final redrawing and countersinking of an end wall profile are carried out at a single station with timing control of separate functions while avoiding time delay and damage to can body sheet metal due to such end wall countersinking.

Flat-rolled steel and rigid aluminum alloy sheet metal can be selected in new thickness gauges and preferred characteristics for container manufacture through use of the disclosed process [FIGS. 8(a)-(c)], which helps to achieve a major portion of desired rivet button height with only a minor decrease in starting thickness gauge [FIGS. 9(a) and (b)] to enable achieving desired final rivet button height with substantially uniform rivet button sheet metal thickness of greater than seventy-five percent of starting thickness gauge.
