Abstract:
Yeast cells having an exogenous lactate dehydrogenase gene ae modified by reducing L- or D-lactate:ferricytochrome c oxidoreductase activity in the cell. This leads to reduced consumption of lactate by the cell and can increase overall lactate yields in a fermentation process. Cells having the reduced L- or D-lactate:ferricytochrome c oxidoreductase activity can be screened for by resistance to organic acids such as lactic or glycolic acid.
Abstract:
The present invention concerns a process for preparing of slurries containing suspended and dissolved particles and a solution as well as a slurry are provided onto a hydrocyclone equipment, disk centrifuge or nozzle centrifuge equipment. The dry matter concentration in the collected slurry is higher than the concentration of the mixture of the slurry and the solution as such. The use of a hydrocyclone stage for this specific purpose is disclosed as well.
Abstract:
A meat product may include a plurality of whole muscle meat portions that each have substantially opposite end faces. The plurality of whole muscle meat portions may be consecutively disposed such that respective adjacent end faces of the whole muscle meat portions substantially face each other and have at least some regions that are attached. The meat product may have a substantially elongated configuration in a direction extending from a first whole muscle meat portion of the consecutively disposed whole muscle meat portions to a last whole muscle meat portion of the consecutively disposed whole muscle meat portions.
Abstract:
A process and device is provided for coating a formed rod or pellet of shortening with a layer of shortening having a higher melting point to prevent agglomeration of the shortening pellets during storage and transportation.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for preparing and dispensing a liquid deicer. The apparatus and method allow deicer ingredients or precursors to be combined in an exothermic reaction to produce a heated deicer at the location where it will be used. In one implementation, potassium hydroxide and acetic acid are combined using the apparatus and method to make hot potassium acetate for use in numerous deicer applications, including deicing of airport runways.
Abstract:
A process for producing lactic acid which includes incubating acid-tolerant homolactic bacteria in nutrient medium to produce a fermentation broth with high levels of free lactic acid is provided. An isolated acid-tolerant homolactic bacteria capable of producing high levels of free lactic acid is also provided.
Abstract:
A method for transacting exchanges of agricultural products involves observing the price of an agricultural product at observation points over a period of time. In one embodiment, a maximum price is specified. For each of the observation points, the maximum price is selected when the observed price is greater than the maximum price, and the observed price is selected when the observed price is less than the maximum price. A price is calculated for a quantity of the agricultural product based on the average of the selected prices and a premium. Individual contracts can be aggregated to reach more acceptable trading quantities and intervals, enabling participation of a derivative hedging products service provider and intermediate parties such as elevators and elevator services companies. Aggregation can be carried out manually or automatically, and configured to support anonymity of various parties in the transaction chain.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a method for producing an amino sugar selected from the group consisting of N-acetylglucosamine, glucosamine, or a combination thereof. The method comprises culturing a yeast in a culture medium and recovering N-acetylglucosamine, glucosamine, or a combination thereof, wherein the yeast comprises an exogenous nucleic acid sequence encoding glucosamine-6-phosphate synthase operably linked to a promoter. The invention also provides a genetically modified yeast that produces an amino sugar selected from the group consisting of N-acetylglucosamine, glucosamine, or a combination thereof.
Abstract:
High fiber, reduced effective carbohydrate formulations useful for preparing food products such as tortillas, tortilla chips, taco shells, corn based snacks, breakfast cereal, and the like comprise about 10-80% masa corn flour; about 10-60% ground corn bran; about 1-20% pre-gelatinized flour and/or pre-gelatinized starch; about 0-60% ground corn germ; about 0-50% corn gluten meal; and about 0-30% vital wheat gluten or wheat protein isolate.
