摘要:
A first stream of non-overlapping spaced-apart sheets which move at a high speed is converted into a second stream of partially overlapping sheets by braking successive sheets of the first stream and deflecting the trailing portions of braked sheets laterally to enable the oncoming foremost sheets of the first stream to catch up with and partly overlap the preceding sheets. When the first stream exhibits a gap as a result of the absence of one or more sheets, or independently of the presence or absence of gaps, the deflection of the braked sheet is repeated at a location which is nearer to the braking station to thus insure that the trailing portion of the braked sheet preceding a gap is deflected laterally immediately before the sheet which follows the gap catches up therewith. The deflection of trailing portions which precede gaps in the first stream is effected by suction. The locus of such deflection can be shifted lengthwise of the path for the sheets in dependency on changes of the ratio of the speeds of first and second streams, on changes of the width of clearances between the sheets of the first stream and/or in dependency on changes of the length of sheets.

Apparatus for receiving a stack of case blank sheets from a source of supply and delivering the sheets in shingled arrangement, for further processing, by receiving the stack at a first level, elevating the stack intact vertically to a second level above the first level, where the stack is transferred to a feeder located at the second level for operation in association with a stripper to feed the sheets forward in shingled arrangement from the bottom of the stack, while stabilizing the stack against toppling backward during feeding of the sheets forward from the bottom of the stack.

A multibin, cut-sheet xerographic copier capable of operating in a simplex or a duplex copy mode, wherein sheets are fed from a selected sheet stack, one at a time, to the copier's transfer station, by a sheet feeding means which includes a combing wheel. The combing wheel shingles the leading edge of the stack's top sheet to an open feed roller nip, to be sensed thereat by a pneumatic sensor. Sensing of this leading edge causes the combing wheel to be lifted off the stack. Subsequently, at a time determined by the copier's control logic, the drive nip closes to thereby feed the top sheet to the copier's paper registration gate, and then to its transfer station. As soon as this sheet's trailing edge has cleared the pneumatic sensor, and the drive nip has opened, the next sheet is staged at the shingled position, in the open drive nip.Means are provided to deshingle the stack when the copier's paper supply drawer is opened, as for reloading paper. The combing wheel, drive nip and associated assemblies are supported by a single frame member, and are thus removable as a unit for replacement or repair.

A feeder mechanism for feeding single sheets, folios or multiple-ply material of paper or the like to subsequent processing machinery. A stack of sheets is partially tilted and edge portions of the front sheet are grasped and bent over by alternately approaching suction devices. While one of the suction devices engages the edge portion of one sheet, the previously detached sheet is being engaged by a conveyor wheel which pulls it completely from the stack.

Apparatus for feeding and transporting blanks of corrugated paperboard and the like is disclosed wherein a stack of blanks is received on a blank feeding station having a first belt-over-roller conveyor which cooperates with an angularly inclined control gate of a gate assembly to feed blanks from the bottom of the stack beneath the control gate and effect shingling of the blanks, whereafter the blanks are transported to a receiving station such as the feed hopper of a printing press or the like. The control gate is adjustable to vary the shingling relationship of the blanks fed from the bottom of the stack and has a low friction surface thereon facilitating optimum operation.

A sheet positioning mechanism for the feed table of a sheet-fed printing press which includes a set of releasable front stops and a side guide, with a wiper adjacent the side guide, the wiper having a limited zone of action. The sheets are fed in a straight stream, in shingled relation, along the feed table, the stream being laterally spaced from the side guide and out of the zone of action. A pair of swingable suckers are provided near the front end of the table and laterally spaced below the sheet path, the suckers being swung forwardly in unison about an arcuate path synchronized with the arrival of the sheet to be positioned so that such sheet is transported both forwardly in the direction of the front stops and laterally from its position in the stream into the zone of action of the wiper so that the wiper acts exclusively on the sheet to be positioned without interference by the overlapped closely following sheet. The wiper acts sufficiently early and is preferably sufficiently rapid so that the sheet is moved against the side guide just prior to engagement of the sheet with the front stops.

Method and apparatus are disclosed for feeding a continuous series of sheets step-wise to a treating machine wherein the rearward and forward edges of successive sheets are overlapped to provide a continuous supply to the treating machine. Each sheet is fed in a simultaneous step-wise manner by a feed member engaging the rear edge of each sheet. The improvement comprises the delivering of each sheet onto the last sheet on the sheet feeder such that the forward edge of the delivered sheet overlaps the rear edge of the last sheet by an amount at least as great as the prescribed overlap so that the feed member adapted to engage the rear edge of the delivered sheet will in the next feed step engage the rear edge of the delivered sheet and bring it into proper overlap position with the adjacent forward sheet which has been moved its prescribed step at the same time. In one of the embodiments the feed step is slightly greater than that desired and means are provided to retract the sheet so that its rear edge abuts a stop to assure exact positioning of the sheet with respect to the treating machine.

An installation for conveying printed products arriving in an overlapping or fish-scale formation comprising an endless revolving driven transport mechanism arranged between an infeed device and a withdrawal or outfeed device and equipped with grippers intended to seize the edges of the overlapping formation of printed products. The grippers are pivotably connected in pairs opposite one another at transverse carriers or supports arranged in spaced relationship behind one another. The infeed device and the withdrawal device are each respectively aligned at the underside with a section of the transport mechanism and each incorporates a revolving conveyor element, the active conveying run of which together with the transverse supports which pass through the aforementioned section form a conveying channel.

Apparatus for individually stopping sheets of material flowing into a sheet stacker. In the manufacture of corrugated paperboard, a plurality of individual sheets are conveyed side by side in an overlapping shingle pattern to a bundle stacker for removal. When bundles are completed, brake members engage the sheets to increase the overlapping of the shingle pattern to allow accumulation of sheets while the bundles are removed. Individualized gates mounted on the brake members stop the flow of sheets. The gates take the form of pivotally mounted finger members operated by a fluid motor. The finger members are pivoted into a sheet stopping position by the fluid motor when the brake members engage the sheets. The fluid motor is controlled by the cycling of the bundle stacker. Additionally, some of the gates may be provided with a biasing control system which will prevent the finger members from assuming a sheet stopping position when no sheets are present at the position controlled by that particular gate.

A technique for reverse shingling a stream of shingled sheets that is especially adapted for feeding corrugated box sheets from a printer to a die press. A slack conveyor belt section pivots the individual sheets about an elongated support roll held stationary above the slack conveyor belt in order to invert the individual sheets.
