Abstract: A piston assembly includes a piston head for reciprocating back and forth within a cylinder of an engine, an upper rod coupled to the piston head at one longitudinal end of the upper rod and fixed relative to the piston head, and a lower rod rotatably coupled to an opposite longitudinal end of the upper rod, the lower rod configured to pivot about the opposite longitudinal end of the upper rod. The lower rod is configured to couple to a crankshaft at a longitudinal end of the lower rod opposite the upper rod. Methods of forming a piston assembly and engines incorporating such piston assemblies are also disclosed.

Abstract: A compression ignition internal combustion engine (1), which includes a cylinder (2), a piston (3) reciprocably received within the cylinder (2), a pair of contra-rotating crankshafts (4, 5) rotatably mounted relative to the cylinder (2), a pair of connecting rods (6, 7) each having a first end (61, 71) connected to a crank journal (41, 51) of a respective one of the crankshafts (4, 5) and a second end (62, 72) connected to the piston (3). The engine (1) is configured such that the stroke of the piston (3) in a first direction toward the crankshafts (4, 5) causes each crankshaft (4, 5) to rotate by a first angle and the piston stroke in a second direction opposite the first direction causes each crankshaft (4,5) to rotate by a second angle different (β−α) from the first angle.

Abstract: A hybrid-electric aerial vehicle is disclosed comprising: an airframe; a plurality of longitudinal booms extending radially from the airframe; a passively charged internal combustion engine operatively coupled with a fuel tank, a generator operatively coupled with the passively charged internal combustion engine; a battery bank operatively coupled with the generator; and a plurality of motors. The passively charged internal combustion engine has an intake engine valve, an exhaust engine valve, and a combustion chamber, wherein the intake engine valve is delayed to provide an expansion ratio in the combustion chamber that is greater than a compression ratio in the combustion chamber. Each of said plurality of motors may be positioned at a distal end of one of said plurality of longitudinal booms and be operatively coupled with a propeller, wherein the plurality of motors is electrically coupled with the battery bank and the generator.

Abstract: A high efficiency reciprocating engine, nominally of the internal combustion type but alternatively of the external combustion type is disclosed. The new engine uses Hypocycloidal and alternatively Epicycloidal gear mechanisms to create differentiated compression and expansion ratios which then promote significant improvements in efficiency through lower compression losses and higher extraction of available energy. Through suitable augmentation, the engines can be made to provide higher power when needed over higher efficiency. Additionally, other parameter modifications enable realization of low side wall loads and true zero exhaust volume.
