In the image forming apparatus, discharge of the sheet onto the output tray is stopped when the distance to the object measured by the ranging sensor is lower than a specific distance.

In general, a first and a second light emitter are aligned wherein the light beams from the first light emitter and second light emitter cross. The first and second light emitter beams cross at the transport media sheet substrate path wherein the transport media sheet substrate path is the path of a media sheet substrate with zero curl. First and second light detectors are aligned to receive the light beams from the first and second light emitters.A media sheet substrate with either positive or negative curl on the lead edge of the sheet substrate interrupts light beams from first and second light emitters, as detected at first and second light detectors. The time delay between the light beam interruptions is proportional to the sheet substrate curl, and the order of interruptions indicates whether the sheet substrate curl is positive or negative.

The sheet supply stack has a center and marginal edges, each having a top. The adjustable sheet feeder comprises a sheet supply stack support, a sheet feed head assembly, a curl sensing device which senses the position of the stack edges relative to the position of the stack center top and provides feedback, an adjustment device, and a feed back display which displays the curl sensing device feedback. The adjustment device adjusts the position of the stack center top relative to the position of the stack marginal edges top based on the curl sensing device feedback.

Accordingly, sheets can be fed with high reliability by making the most of the flexibility of the drive shaft. The extremely slim and highly reliable paper feeding apparatus with the extremely slim pickup roller is provided. By stacking a plurality of these paper feeding apparatuses, a compact multitray can be provided.
