Abstract:
A liquid crystal display, which allows proper optical compensation for bend-aligned mode liquid crystal cell and exhibits high contrast, excellent viewing angle properties and a high black display fidelity, is provided. A bend-aligned mode liquid crystal cell is properly optically compensated for by properly controlling the optical properties, including wavelength dispersion, of a first optical anisotropic layer and a second optical anisotropic layer.

A hinge mechanism 30 connects an upper case 11 having a display section 10 and a lower case 21 having an operating section 20 to that the cases can be opened and closed. The hinge mechanism is provided with two connecting members 31 and 32 arranged over the upper case 11 and the lower case 21; a first hinge shaft 33 rotatably connecting upper case 11 and connecting members 31 and 32; and second hinge shaft 34 rotatably connecting lower case 21 and connecting members 31 and 32. The two connecting members 31 and 32 are arranged to sandwich upper case 11 and lower case 21 from the outside. The first hinge shaft 33 and second hinge shaft 34 are arranged parallel to each other.

A foldable portable information terminal includes an upper unit having a display unit on its one side, a lower unit having operation keys on its one side, and a movable connecting mechanism connecting the upper unit and the lower unit allowing the upper unit to be opened, closed, and freely rotated with respect to a longitudinal direction of the lower unit. The displaying mode of the display unit whose direction varies depending on a position of the upper unit is changed depending on a positional relationship of the upper unit and the lower unit.

A data recording and reproducing apparatus has a reproduction-only mode capable of reproducing a voice file and a recording and reproducing mode capable of recording and reproducing a voice file as an operating mode. An operating mode switching section automatically switches the operating mode to the recording and reproducing mode when an instruction to record a voice file is given in the reproduction-only mode. A recording section records the voice file after the operating mode is switched to the reproduction-only mode.
