    Abstract: A character recognition apparatus with a plurality of sensing devices arranged in a line for scanning elemental character areas in a direction perpendicular to the line. Scan signals are applied through corresponding preprocessing networks each of which includes horizontal and vertical center line detectors. The output of the detectors are combined in a gate which in turn produces a pulse whenever center lines are detected. The gate output pulse is held in a shift register with the contents of the shift register being examined by a logic circuit and decoder to determine whether a vertical portion of a character is being sensed with the decoder output being an outline of the character. The outline is then applied to a character recognition circuit. A white level detection circuit is provided to inhibit operation of the gate when blank paper is being sensed.

    Abstract: A digital information recording apparatus is disclosed in which a high-coercivity planar recording member is moved across a gap between pole-pieces of a recording head. A first winding is energized to produce a varying magnetic field, representative of the digital information to be recorded, across the recording gap. A second winding is energized to produce a steady DC magnetic bias field at a substantial angle to the surface of the recording member such that the digital information is recorded in the presence of the steady DC magnetic bias field. In a second embodiment, one pole-piece is common to the varying field representative of the digital information to be recorded and the steady DC magnetic bias field.

    Abstract: A gimbal mounting for a magnetic head is disclosed which is constructed of a sheet of resilient material which has apertures therein defining a first gimbal supporting an intermediate area within an outer area of the sheet and further apertures defining a second gimbal supporting an inner area of the sheet within the intermediate area. The outer area is secured to a support member and a magnetic head is secured to the inner area. The intermediate area also carries a pair of skids, or alternatively a pair of further gimballed inner areas to which magnetic heads are secured. The skids and head, or the three heads form, in cooperation with a record surface form, a three-point suspension for the intermediate area. The first gimbal ensures that the three-point suspension is able to follow relatively slow surface changes of the record whilst the second gimbal supporting the inner area permits the head to be closely in contact with the record surface in spite of relatively rapid surface changes.

    Abstract: A system for the generation of clock signals in a data processing apparatus is disclosed, in which the clock signals are developed from a source of higher frequency pulses. The clock signals are applied to an apparatus in which data signals are represented in nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) manner, and the clock signals are synchronized to the occurrence of changes in data item representation. It is recognized that the synchronization of the signals may vary and, in particular that there is a condition of spurious synchronization in which the clock signals may occur 180* out of phase with data changes. The system proposed is arranged to recognize both variations in synchronism and the spurious synchronism condition and to correct the relative timing between clock and data change signals to bring the system into true synchronism by modifying the application of the higher frequency pulses to a clock signal generating countdown arrangement.

    Abstract: This disclosure relates to a recording tape cassette which is removably mounted on a baseplate assembly, which assembly carries a drive capstan and recording heads. The cassette includes a tape guide means having two concave members separated by a gap at the first corner inside of the boxlike cassette. One concave member extends parallel to a first side of the cassette forming a portion of the tape path. The tape path continues through an opening in the second side of the cassette. A face portion of the second side has mounted thereon a plurality of pressure rollers and pressure pads with the tape traversing the pads and rollers outside the cassette. A tape inlet in the second side is provided such that the tape enters the cassette adjacent a second corner diagonally opposite from the first corner and forms loose folds therein. By engaging the cassette with the baseplate assembly, each pressure pad on the cassette maintains the tape in contact with a corresponding recording head.
