摘要: A real-time polyphonic pitch controller and process for controlling notes or tones emanating from signal synthesizers such as used in the performance of music. The controller comprises a body with key controllers, each of which activates a pre-programmed note; a strumming controller which automatically activates selected key controlled notes in a pre-programmed sequence and rate; and controls and displays used for programming and performance. Extending longitudinally from the body is a guitar-like neck graduated by fret markings and over which slides a hand controller incorporating finger levers. Sliding the hand controller creates portamento, vibrato or glissando effects on the notes activated by the key controllers. Also, each finger lever of the hand controller when depressed raises and/or lowers its own peculiar, pre-programmed combination of individually voiced notes by pre-programmed amounts. Some note pitches may be raised, others lowered, and still others unaffected by the movement of a lever, and the finger levers may be operated separately or in combination. When only partially depressed, a lever alters the pitch of the pre-selected combination of individually voiced notes fractionally, in porportion to the lever's depression. The controllers may further operate in conjunction with a computer program which interprets and processes the controller's pitch altering signals and teaches the musician how to perform on the instrument expressively. In an alternative embodiment, the controller incorporates a sliding fretted hand controller with finger pads rather than levers.

摘要: A system for facilitating instruction of musicians in playing of a stringed musical instrument of the type having a plurality of strings and a plurality of frets such as a guitar. The system includes means for producing signals representing musical notes to be played, this means including an array of switches (which may take the form of capacitors), one switch being provided for each note. The switches are positioned beneath each string, which may constitute one of the components of respective switches within a group, in vicinity of each fret. Processing means, which may be coupled to the means for producing signals, produces data representing the musical notes when the system is in its input configuration. Means for receiving, storing and playing back data therefrom representing the musical notes are coupled to the processing means. The processing means may be coupled to the means for receiving, storing and playing back data and are responsive to data develops signals representing the musical notes when the system is in its playback configuration. Display means, which may be coupled to the processing means and responsive to the signals therefrom, provides visual indication of the musical notes to be played, the display means including an array of light-emitting members (which may be LED's), one light-emitting member (LED) being provided for each note. Individual ones of the light-emitting members are positioned beneath each string in vicinity of each fret.

摘要: An electronic sensing system is disclosed for sensing fingering on a stringed and fretted musical instrument, such as a guitar, to produce therefrom electronic signals truly representative of the music created by the musical instrument. Sensing includes detection of the musical pitch created by each selected string and fret combination, as well as detection of the vibration state of the selected string and any pitch variations induced by the performer through string bending. The system is microprocessor controlled with each string of the instrument being successively and repeatedly sampled during playing of the instrument, and outputs indicative of the fret-string combination then being fingered, the vibration state, and any string bending are coupled to the microprocessor in digital form, and with the microprocessor then utilizing the then supplied information to provide an output suitable for coupling to a synthesizer to thereby enable performance of the music then being played by the performer utilizing the stringed and fretted musical instrument.

摘要: A stringed musical instrument embodies a matrix of intersecting frets and strings. A generally rectangular fingerboard mounts the strings and frets in a generally intersecting relationship thereon. The strings are tuned by string tensioning means, including tuning pegs. The string vibrations are amplified by an amplifier and sensed by a magnetic pickup. The strings and frets each define a number of notes, equal to at least the number of notes of an octave. In a first scheme of modulation, a plurality of strings are played along a single fret in a manner similar to a piano, the octave and key linear distance spacings as well as notes, being emulated. In a second scheme of modulation, different frets are played to obtain different notes, as in a guitar, to achieve a wide tonal range with easy fingering positions. Vertically adjustable magnets pick up the vibrations and are able to change the vibration sensitivity of the instrument.

摘要: A multiple language electronic keyboard system is disclosed for generating and modifying musical note information. The system includes a plurality of manually activated switches arranged in a matrix of rows and columns with the switches sufficiently close to allow a single finger of the user to activate a plurality of switches in a single stroke. A decoder detects and distinguishes between a first language and a second language of distinct switch activation patterns. Musical note information is generated by a processor which receives information from the decoder concerning the location of each activated switch and the language detected by the decoder. The versatility of this system is further enhanced by the addition of envelope and tone generators and also by visual display devices. In the preferred embodiment the keyboard is arranged to positionally and operationally emulate a guitar fret board.

摘要: In an electrical tone generator apparatus is provided for automatically selecting one of a library of chord types which is closest to a chord fingered on a fretted string instrument. The closest decision is made by processing the fingered fret input data by a set of matched filters each of which corresponds to a member of the library of chord types. The chord type decision is made to correspond to the matched filter producing the maximum output response. The selection between chord types yielding equal responses is resolved by priority logic based upon the frequency of chord usage. A root note is chosen for each chord type. Note keying data is generated from the selected chord types which is transposed to the correct musical pitches in response to the chosen root note. The note keying data is grated by an automatic rhythm generator and the output is used to actuate electronic musical tone generators.

摘要: Musical instruments playable in duet fashion by one player includes a stringed instrument with segmented frets. A control system for the other instrument includes a control circuit for each string and which has actuating circuits that are associated with the open and keyed string tones playable on the string. The actuating circuits associated with the second and higher string keying positions are enabled by simultaneous string contact with adjacent fret sections, and simultaneous string contact with a plate and fret segment at the first position serves to enable the actuating circuit associated with the first string keying position. A disabling circuit has components associated with each actuating circuit and which disable the associated actuating circuit in response to output signals of the actuating circuits associated with the higher keying positions. Open tone sensing circuits are avoided in one embodiment especially designed for chord playing players of the stringed instrument and in which simultaneous signals from a predetermined number of disabling circuits that are enabled by simultaneous keying of different strings serve to control an auxiliary circuit to enable the actuating circuits associated with the open tones of the unkeyed strings.

摘要: A floor mounted electric bass played solely by striking its strings with a player''s shoe and thereby depressing its strings against its frets. The base is a stringed instrument with a neck having two transversely oriented fretted surfaces. One string, or one string unit comprising multiple strings tuned as a unit for playing in unison, is secured above each of the fretted surfaces and when not depressed is contacted by a vibration inhibiting pad. A magnetic pickup converts the string vibration to electrical signals when a string is depressed against a fret.
