A method for automatically setting the rider roll/glue applicator roll gap for the single face web on a glue machine senses a forward drag that the single face web, operating at corrugator speed, exerts on the glue applicator roll, driven at an underspeed, after bringing the flute tips of the single face web into contact with the glue applicator roll by adjusting the position of the rider roll. Changes in forward drag exerted on the glue applicator roll are monitored and related directly to glue applicator roll drive current to provide a slight compression of the single face web between the rider roll and the glue applicator roll. Preferably, the glue applicator roll uses a regenerative drive and the target drive current command in a feedback control system to cause the gap to be adjusted to achieve the desired slight compression of the web flutes and to maintain the glue applicator roll under speed.

An apparatus for detection of the accuracy of format of a web of corrugated cardboard moved in a conveying direction comprises a light source which emits a light band to the surface of the web of corrugated cardboard in a direction crosswise of the conveying direction and at an angle to the web of corrugated cardboard. A measuring camera detects the different light intensities of the light reflected by the plane portions and the profiled patterns of the web of corrugated cardboard. This electronic image in the camera is evaluated by an evaluation device for determining the distance of the profiled patterns from each other.

A machine for producing corrugated board which utilizes a dual thermal sensing system to determine the length of the web is disclosed. The corrugating machine includes a frame through which a web material is adapted to be traversed, an applicator adapted to apply a liquid spot, such as water, to the web, and first and second temperature sensors adapted to detect the liquid spot after the liquid spot is applied.

A first tension adjustor for adjusting the tension of a liner and a pitch measuring device for measuring the corrugation pitch of a first core board of a single-faced corrugated board are used. A first tension controller operates so that the tension acting on the liner is adjusted on the basis of the corrugation pitch of the first core board of the single-faced corrugated board. Further, a second tension adjustor for adjusting the tension of the single-faced corrugated board and a phase shift measuring device for measuring a phase shift between the corrugations of the first core board of the single-faced corrugated board and the corrugations of a second core board to be laminated to the first core board are used. A second tension controller operates so that the tension acting on the single-faced corrugated board is adjusted on the basis of the phase shift measured by the phase shift measuring device. According to this construction it is possible to prevent a pitch shift and a phase shift of core board corrugations and there can be obtained a corrugated board of high quality.

A paper corrugator machine has a closed loop for delivering warm adhesive from a source to a pan from which the adhesive is applied onto the crests of the corrugated paper flutes. To insure a delivery of the correct amount of adhesive to the flute crests, a predetermined amount of adhesive is first accumulated in a graduated column. Then, the adhesive delivery feed is switched from the closed loop to the graduated column. A detector senses upper and lower limits of the amount of the adhesive in the column. The rate of the delivery of adhesive is determined by how long it takes for the predetermined amount of adhesive to be delivered from the column to the corrugating machine. Responsive to this determination, the corrugating machine may be adjusted to apply more or less adhesive to the flute crests.

The apparatus and method of the present invention utilize a pair of fixed-position laser triangulation sensors, with one sensor located above the board and one directly below. Each sensor produces a measurement signal proportional to the distance between itself and the corrugated board's surface. In one embodiment, the output signal from each sensor is simultaneously processed along two different parallel paths to measure different corrugated board characteristics. A second pair of sensors may be located on the opposite edge of the board. When both board edges are measured, the left and right-edge measurements are averaged to produce a mean value for the board's full width, as well as subtracted from one another to determine the coss-machine gradient.

A single facer comprises an apparatus for automatically adjusting a gap between rolls, i.e., an apparatus for maintaining a roll gap constant. The apparatus for adjusting the distance between the centers of the roll shafts is operable to move one roll toward the other by actuating driving means. The driving means is controlled in response to the variation in the temperature of the frame which supports the driving means of the roll in place, or to the passage of time after a heating mechanism for heating the rolls has started operation.

A method and apparatus for producing an order change in a corrugator machine. A pulse generator is provided on the medium splicer of each single facer in a corrugator machine and on the splicer of a double backer to produce feedlength signals proportional to web material supplied by each splicer. A computer calculates position values which are functions of the relative physical locations of the corrugator machine components, and inventory values which are functions of the relative physical locations and of differences in the feedlength values. The computer then compares feedlength signals and inventory values and as a result of these comparisons, generates sequential control signals to corrugator machine components to produce an order change including a synchronous splice of all web components with a minimum of waste and production downtime.
